October 6, 2010 at 6:53 am #3412hi big dave and helen
welcome on the forum and goodbye in normandyOctober 6, 2010 at 7:07 pm #3413We have just returned (a bit early) from our big trip.
I would be up for the trip to Normandy, but I’m not sure about my Land Rover’s six cylinder engine. It’s working fine, but it makes an intermittent, horrible noise, like a steam train. I’ll check for the obvious causes like exhaust leaks and valve adjustment, and consult with a mechanic the next few days. I don’t want to damage it beyond its current state. The thought that I’m doing just that makes it difficult to drive it in this condition.

MarcAnd that Tony has brought his tow rope 😆
Come on Jeremy, it would be great to see you and the family. if all goes well, this will be the largest gathering of Land Rover Dormobiles in years. You know you want your landy in the photo?
The funny thing is, I bet we’re the ones that don’t make it. I just have this feeling!!!!!

October 7, 2010 at 6:14 am #3416😀 hi jeremy,
I hope that you are going to find a solution for your mechanical troubles,
Yes, you have to be on the photo 😉
michelOctober 7, 2010 at 7:52 am #3417Hi Jeremy
Let me add my voice to the chorus – it won’t be the same without you! 😥
My Land Rover doctor (nr Vevey) has a lot of experience with 6cyl engines if you need a professional opinion. Besides, if you come we can take turns lashing Mick with the tow-rope!October 8, 2010 at 5:27 pm #3418Well, I am sorry but our Dormobile won’t be in the great 2010 photo.
I’ve found a recessed or burnt valve (exhaust #6) and I don’t want to risk travelling another 1500 km with it. I didn’t recognize it when I had the head off in June. It sucked a tissue right up the exhaust pipe, even after I re-set the tappet clearance to spec. That explains the “chuff chuff chuff” that is louder under load.
The engine also sounds like a diesel above 2700 RPM, especially on acceleration and overrun, so I suspect the big ends are failing. And there’s that ticking valve I have to fix, hopefully the same one that failed.
I’ve probably already driven 8,000 km this way, but I don’t want to drive any more and risk catastrophic damage.
It’s currently in a professional garage (not Vevey, I can’t speak french!) being diagnosed so I can plan my winter project renovating the engine.
Does anyone have any new sixpot big end shells, piston rings, gudgeon pins, main bearing seals, or exhaust valves they can relay to me via Tony? 😉
Have fun in Normandy, everyone!
-JeremyPS my not coming also saves 250L of fuel, that’s got to be a good balance.

Sorry to hear the bad news. Let me know if I can do anything. (By the way, I should have mentioned that my guy in Vevey speaks German)All the best,
TonyOctober 8, 2010 at 10:24 pm #3420HI Jeremy
Sorry to here your trouble. Just about to rebuild a 6 pot, so will let you know what I find. The engine I am rebuilding needs a crank regrind, but the bores are good, so just going to re-ring the standard pistons. Will be fitting a new oil pump and anything else I find.
Been directed to https://www.jrwadhams.co.uk/Index.asp for parts as they seam to have most of the bits I need. My only worry is the quality of the parts? I have no reason for this worry, I’m just sick of the poor quality of parts available for Land Rovers.
Cheers Mick
