HI Tony
What a glorious noise, the crack of leather on willow. I know all of those things you mention, but not really the sort of things you visit on holiday in a Dormobile. I’m sure Roger would be over the moon if all us lot turned up and camped in his garden!!!
Anyway, It seam your knowledge of Yorkshire is as poor as my knowledge of Switzerland. I’m not going to list all the good things about Yorkshire because I do not have all night, and definitely do not want to encourage any more visitors. Too many here already eating all our Wensleydale cheese and drink all our Black Sheep beer.
Louise and I would love to come again to Switzerland again. 5 years ago we drove through Geneva and I witnessed the most appalling driving. This woman was so busy looking at all the building that she failed to realise the traffic had stopped. Only at the last minute did she realise and slammed on the brakes. Lucky for her she was in a Classic Range Rover and it stopped very quickly, avoiding a collision. The two vans behind her also managed to stop, but the L322 Range Rover behind them only stopped when it ploughed into the second van. The woman said “oopps” and quickly drove away. Woman drivers!!!
Apart from that incident, Geneva looked just like it does in the ‘Champions’. Nice fountain! This holiday, we will probably have a look around the town and this time I will drive!
The good news is, I finished making the wardrobe this evening, apart from fitting the hinges. That’s only because I don’t have any yet.
Cheers Mick

June 7, 2010 at 6:50 pm #3166I’m definitely up for popping over to Chamonix or other Western Alp town over a weekend in late July. My wife speaks some french and wants to go to Provence, so it might become our main summer vacation.
I can’t commit to a meet in the Autumn. If it’s nice weather, the Alps are the place to be. If it happens to be cold and rainy already, I’d prefer to head south to the last rays of sun before winter.
The Dormobile is officially roadworthy again, with a new cylinder head and new paint! The exhaustive test was on the road to the Rosenlaui glacier, 14km of switchbacks at 10% grade, with the whole family aboard. Yes, I know that taking your family with you on the test drive is a sure way to cause it to break down, but this time the car held together.

June 8, 2010 at 5:10 pm #3168Hi Mick,
what dates are you looking to go to Morroco next year? (and for how long…?
oiur plans for morroco have been scupperd by some people not being able to go and my shifts not fitting in with the others … we’re flexible on the route but would like some comany!

WyvernJune 8, 2010 at 5:16 pm #3169Hi Jeremy
we are going to be in Switzerland in a couple of weeks … are you about?
WyvernJune 9, 2010 at 6:39 am #3149@Michel (and others),
I think it would be best for you and Marc and ?Mr. Jones? to make a fixed plan for a French rendezvous and communicate that with us. My preference for Spring is to take a ferry to a Mediterranean island (e.g. April). But if the dates are OK I can perhaps do both?
@wyvern,
I’ll send you my contact information in a PM-Jeremy

June 21, 2010 at 9:33 pm #3170Hi all
Barney is slowly getting ready for the trip and if all goes well we should be in and around the Swiss border in the 24th July. Been told of a few nice places to visit in Switzerland and may take a look, but cannot remember any of the names as I type.
So, does anyone want to meet up and can one of you locals suggest a time and a venue.
Cheers Mick
June 22, 2010 at 7:13 am #3171Hi Mick
you’ll be coming by the West (French speaking) part, where I’m not so familiar with the territory, so I will defer to Tony to make a suggestion and accept what you two agree upon. I know of another Land Rover Dormobile (’64, I believe?) in Lucerne that is scheduled for its inspection in early July, which may be ready for such a trip by the 24th, as well.
See you there and good luck on the way!

June 22, 2010 at 3:37 pm #3172I suggest either Martigny ( if Mick’s comiing over the Forclaz pass) or Le Bouveret (southern shore of Lake Geneva) as possible meeting places. I haven’t had much time to organise anything yet – but promise to extract digit if a meeting is possible! 😀
June 22, 2010 at 5:34 pm #3173Yes, get the special “digit extractor” tool and get to work ;^)
It is very ironic that a person in Lucerne, just over the mountain, bought a Land Rover Dormobile in 2010 from the same group of German importers from whom I bought mine in 2007 (you know who, Tony). In fact, the two Dormobiles were owned by friends in the same region, and used to camp together. Here is a photo he gave me of our two vehicles together, taken before we owned them. I’ll mention this get-together to him and see if he’s interested.
Both vehicles have required lots of work to get them up to Swiss road standards but I think we’ll be prepared come end of July.
At this point I’ll commit to coming, regardless of whether in Switzerland or Eastern France. Probably with a 5 yr. old and maybe even with more of the family. I don’t need any organized program, just a date and a location.

June 22, 2010 at 7:39 pm #3174you know who, Tony
Not W – “trust me, I’m a doctor” – A , by any chance?
Jeremy, would you (and the other Dormie) be interested in staying overnight?
Mick, can you tell me where you plan to enter Switzerland?
June 23, 2010 at 9:40 am #3175Yes, W.A. imported Christopher’s and was involved in importing mine.
Anyway, of course it was my intent to overnight one or two times at the Rendezvous Suisse Ouest. I only know Lausanne and Aigle on your side of the Röstigraben so I’m due for a geography tour of my new homeland. We can also take the Friday and Monday off.

(now a doctor, well, of engineering)June 23, 2010 at 8:55 pm #3176Congratulations Dr J!!!
From
Professeur T (retd)!!June 23, 2010 at 10:40 pm #3177HI all
I have been told by the better half that we have to go to Chamonix, so we will no doubt continue over the Forclaz pass into Switzerland. Been told I should have a look at the Matterhorn and then drive back into France over the Great St Bernard pass. Got a Landy mate who lives not far from here, but has an apartment near to Chamonix. he is giving me lots of advice on where to go. He, and his wife, are skiers and hill runners, climbers, walkers and campers, so have been most places in this area over the years. He is supposed to be sending me info on where to stay with our Dormobile. Still hoping to do the odd night wild camp, but expect to spend most nights on camp sites.
Cheers Mick
