I am looking for a roof rack for my Land Rover 2A Dormobile. I would like the shorter version that does not stick out over the windshield.

I’m happy to have a go at making a replica of the original short rack. It would be as close as I can make it with the equipment I have. Let me know if your interested.

I am interested. I looked at your website and I do like the looks of the longer model that you have, it would be great if you could make a shorter version of that. What kind of cost/timeline are we looking at? I will be coming through your area at the end of Nov.

Larry

I can make you a shorter version of the Dormobile rack and it should be done for November. I am on with a batch at the moment and will be galvanising them. How long do you want it? Level with the front gutter?
As for price, I can tell you once I have made one, but I would expect it to be around the £275.00 mark.

I would like to keep it close to the original length shown in the top two photos at the link below, so maybe stick out 3-4 inches past the windscreen. I would like it to be at least 23 inches wide so that I can get my Pelican storage boxes on it. I would also like it to stick out far enough so that I could put some drop down spotlights like those in the second photo. Do you think that will work?

September 25, 2014 at 1:01 pm #5259Hi Larry
Just had a measure and the rack would be 24″ if level with the front gutter. I can make it overhang as much as you like and can add some brackets for the lamps to bolt through. The brackets can be on the outside of the front rail or on the inside of the front rail. I think if I was making this for my dormobile, I wold have the brackets on the inside to hide the nuts and make the rack a couple of inches longer. How many lamps were you thinking of? Are you ok if I make it just like my standard racks or do you want a copy of the original?

I do like the way that the back support is arched in to make the rack a little narrower to follow the curves of the roof and then have the front two legs attach over the windshield. But if that is going to add significantly to the cost then I am comfortable with the way you have the current setup. For the front and the lights, how about have it extend about 4 inches past the front gutter and then move the top support bar back to be even with the gutter. That should give enough room to allow the lights to be mounted upright. Probably looking at 4 light tabs. I will need to get some light dimensions to get spacing but this is the look I am going for:

If you set the top support bar back a bit I shouldn’t need the extra light bar mount that they added.
PM me your email address and I can probably send you a sketch if any of this is unclear.

September 25, 2014 at 8:30 pm #5261Hi Larry
The problem making a copy of the original rack is the radius of the cross tube. I have a standard set of bending dies and that radius is significantly great than the radius of the side rails. I do know a chap with a different bender and am going to see if it will form the bend we need.
A drawing of what a customer wants is always usefull. Send it to info@lrbits.co.uk
