I had always wanted to do a trip to the north of Norway, and my partner had been on the post boat for a trip up thorough the fiords to the Russian boarder but was frustrated from not getting to explore the valleys and roads that they could see from the boat, so we hatched a plan to take a trip north capturing all the sites and explore the region.
We sailed from Harwich to Hock of Holland the the adventures began. Taking 2 days to make our way though holland to Germany, then up into Denmark, we made our way to the very tip of the country and caught a ferry into Bergan.
From there we headed north keeping the sea on the left hand side, we meandered along the coast though numerous tunnels and mind blowing views.
The speed limit in Norway is 50mph so perfect for the 110 pottering along, and having time for sight-seeing. Fuel was about the same price as in the UK, (£1.20 at that time) but it seems to be a better quality and the slow speed and different fuel gave us a better MPG – in the UK I get about 400 miles per tank, but on the trip we were getting about 450-470!!
The traffic was very light and very well behaved, they do drive on the Right so normal overseas caution is needed when pulling out and overtaking…
Food and alcohol are expensive in Norway, so we stocked up on our main staples of Tuna, pasta and tomatoes, with a few boxes of wine for my partner to enjoy in the evenings.
The route took us over several fiords and most of the ferries were free, however we ended up on one ferry that took a 7hr journey to the Loffland islands and cost £70 – but saved us 2 days driving.
There are tolls on many of the roads, and I was quite worried about these, however there is a number plate recognition system for them and about six weeks after we got home the bill arrived … it cost only £20 for about 2000 miles and many tolls roads so a welcome relief!
The 110 was well behaved and I only had one issue when driving up and down all the fabulous roads, the steering became a little light, cased by the wear on the front tyres .. this required me to swap the fronts to rears…. simples … ?? well like all things landrover this became an adventure as the locking wheel nuts couldn’t be un done with my short wheel brace so we looked for a garage, which were all closed as it was a bank holiday .. eventually we found a garage with a lovey lady who let me use the tools and ramp to swap over the wheels – she wouldn’t take payment, but we managed to give her a box of wine that she was very great full of (the wine would have cost £60 in Norway!!)
We found many fabulous places to pullover and park up for the night with awesome views to wake up to – as it was summer we had 24 hrs daylight when we crossed the arctic circle and the weather was fabulous for the whole 18 days we were away.
I’ll post a proper route if anyone is interested, (and some pictures when I work out how to do it again !)Team Wyvern
