After a few late decisions and persuasion from a few friends, we put the dormobile back together and agreed to drive it to the Sydney Expo. This is one of the few shows in Australia for landrovers 🙂 I was keen to test out the new 3.54 diff and was pleasantly surprised that we could cruise at 100-110kph. Unfortunately, after a few kilometers the rear pinion seal started throwing oil everywhere 🙁 and after 500 kilometers it was getting messy.
Little did I know though, but the convoy leader had radioed ahead and had arranged a repair. Two hours later and we arrived at a fellow enthusiasts house who promptly carried out expert repairs. A quick clean up at the car wash and we were on our way to the show. We arrived to very heavy rain, high winds and thunder 😯 Now all the original rubbers have melted in the heat over here, so it wasn’t long before the rain was coming in 😯 After some makeshift repairs with pizza boxes and tape 🙄 we settled down to sleep. By 2.30am the weather was horrendous and my lad who was sleeping below was soaked, the campers next to us were getting blown away and there were many damaged tents and tarps. We carried out more temporary repairs and slept as best we could. There’s nothing like an aussie storm 😀
Sunday morning “showtime” was just as bad, as the rain continued to wreck the day 🙁 We set up the dormobile in the arena and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of interest shown by lots of wet enthusiasts. Most people here have never even heard of a dormobile, so to see one in the flesh took most of them by surprise.
The highlight of the day came when I was awarded the trophy for “Best Camper” in show 8) , it certainly made the whole trip worthwhile. The journey home was just as wet until we hit queensland and a bit of sunshine. Also on the way home news came of an old dormobile for sale. We detoured to have a look and was surprised to find a six cylinder series 2a. Unfortunately it’s been stood for about 8 years and is rotten, but the interior is complete and good so between us it’s been purchased 😀 Not sure what will happen to it yet but it’s been saved.I’ll post pics later.A few pics of the journey down
