Hi all
my Dormobile has lost the exterior straps that held the roof down whilst travelling. All that remains are the steel loops on the roof that a strap went through and two single bolts with the remains of some canvas strapping trapped between the head of the bolt and the panel. Is this a common set up?? There are no other holes or marks that suggest she was never altered??
Cheers Mick
August 23, 2007 at 6:38 pm #1458yes, two straps on the outside, there should also be two on the inside, it’s a section on vinyl material with a metal eyelet punched in, this secures to a toggle one at the front one at the rear.

August 23, 2007 at 10:46 pm #1459Hi jonny
Do you have a picture of the straps on the exterior so that I can compare them with my vehicle
Cheers Mick
August 24, 2007 at 6:17 pm #1460Hi Mick
I took a picture of Jonny’s outside straps at the Rumseys workshop meet last year and this is one of them…
Nice but I don’t think original. I have seen the remnants of originals as you describe somewhere and will try to trace a shot. Ru’s are in the same state of yours, original fixings but rotted straps.
The current Dormobile spares catalogue just has rubber bonnet type straps or those like Jonny’s for £42 a set, but I guess you know that already!
Kind regards
Paul

mine has the rubber type straps, two of. I assumed these were correct for the year? I managed to get a genuine brochure and price list from ebay the other day, but there are no photos of that side of the vehicle in it.
I still have those drawings of the gas bottle cage you requested but have lost your email address. Still need them?
How is Barney coming along and have you moved yet?Andy
So many questions, so little time…… 😆
August 30, 2007 at 11:01 pm #1462Hi peril
Thought you had forgotten about the drawing. 🙁 Barney going well but slowly due to getting ready to move. rebuilding WWD at present, so covered in soot.
My email is mick@oacc.co.uk

I have just got hold of another early Dormobile road test in the July 1961 edition of Autocar magazine, this clearly shows the same style of over centre clip that I have on Bea for securing the roof. This is very slightly different to the one photographed above but works on the same principle. Based on this and a couple of early brochures I have showing this clip, I believe the metal over centre clip was used on the early LandRover Dormobiles being replaced by the straps possibly from about 1964 ish, I suspect that as these straps wore out or rotted that they would generally be replaced by the later style of over centre pictured above and that Tim still sells today.Phil

Hi Mick,
My dormobile had the straps fitted as you describe, one had been replaced over the years but both were worn out. I’ve been searching for some time to come up with an alternative way to secure the roof and stop the rattles 😆
I wasn’t too keen on the toggles as in the pics above, but today I found these and purchased a set 😀 They look a bit modern but work perfectly, holding the roof secure and no rattles.http://caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=11107
