Hello, I have an early VW Dormobile in the USA and was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the numbers punched into the plate on my passenger side door. It reads 6463.3263. Also, I was told there should be an identification plate from VW with an indication that my vw went to the UK to be converted with the martin walter edition. I remember reading somewhere that Martin Walter sold kits for people to convert their vehicles. Is this true? The Martin Walter edition seems very complete and looks like it was factory done or at least by a professional. Could someone cure my couriosity? Thank you for any of your knowledge.

Hi Lucky! OK – I have contacted Dormobile on a couple of occasions to see if I could find out details about the numbers stamped on my makers plate.the answer?…..”we do not have any records of the serial numbers”. The company has seen mixed fortunes over the years with people coming and going and it appears these records are lost or not yet found – sad, I know, unbelievable – I know!

Forgive me if you do,but are you aware of the ‘M plate’ located behind the passenger seat? (not the V.I.N plate behind the drivers seat) The codes stamped into this show original colour & trim & optional extras on leaving the VW factory.decode it here…

Regarding the info on its shipping destination,The only way I found out the port my bus was destined for when new was to buy a ‘birth certificate’ from VW Stiftung Museum, they hold all the archives.a nice bit of history for any bus.

Probably not what you want to hear but seems us Dormy owners are all in the same boat regarding factory history.not sure about the DIY Dormy kits though I know the Martin Walter roof was an option on some Westfalias. This isn’t a very busy forum so you may wait a while for an answer!

hope this helps – kind regards – Rob
