      Hi,
we took the ferry from Genova and spent 10 days in Northern Sardinia. Just the Dormobile this time, no caravan. We packed a 3-way fridge (gas, 240V, 12V) and a portable toilet, 4 bicycles, childseats, charcoal grill, white gas lantern, and beach stuff. I had a large box of spare parts and my entire toolbox.

      photos

While looking (in futility) for a parking space in Genova I saw this! I immediately stopped, parked illegally, which didn’t bother anyone, and found the owner, who is a garage mechanic (his garage door is just out of view at the right of the photo).

The owner says he’s had it for 25 years. It’s just got the roof (with original cots and covers) and the seats (two single fronts, black Series 3 type, swapped to RHD). It’s a sixpot but it is not in running condition.

We found out that Sardinia closes its doors on October 1 and we weren’t able to find a campsite after that. After 3 days of roughing it in the wild, we spent the last night in a Bed & Breakfast before boarding the ferry.

Somewhere en route, the holder for the choke cable on the Stromberg carburetor fell off, and I had to fix the cable guide with zip ties and duct tape to get the engine to run. The brakes started grabbing so I suspect that a hub seal has gone. And finally the smell of sulphur was overpowering us on the way home … I discovered only after arriving home that the battery under my seat was boiling! It turns out it was charging at 15.2V. This might help explain why the alternator melted in August (though that was also probably due to a gradually breaking/arcing blade connector that I hadn’t noticed). I’m lucky the battery didn’t explode! I found the adjusting screw on the regulator and trimmed it today to 14.3V .

Jeremy – just seen this – fantastic!

Maybe a couple of lessons learned on the trip (isn’t that what they are for?) but at least you have done it.
I can imagine that 3 nights wild camping tested you all and can fully appreciate the bed and breakfast before the ferry.

Hopefully it hasn’t put the family off too much?

        All the best

        Alex
