I recently picked up a bay vintage dormi roof to fit on my split bus, which i don’t see as a problem – however on striping the roof down i’ve found that the roof had been fitted with a lenght of steel angle running along the hinged side and sq plates at the hinge locations. This steel has rusted badly, and theres little of it left. Can any one tell me if the additional of steel angle and plates is factory original??
i’m about to have aluminum angle and plates fibreglassed into the roof skin along the hinged side, along with an aluminum reinforcement bar/flat strip along the opposite side?
Has anyone got any comments about adding stiffening to the roof cap?? Could it have negative effects? 😯 as without it the roof cap seems pretty twisty and flexible?? 😕
I’ll try and get some pictures up, but any comments would be welcome…

      Hello,

sorry, I have no information about VWs, but I think you’re on the right track.

The Martin Walter roof on my Land Rover had fiberglassed into it factory-installed steel reinforcement plates at the hinges and steel tubes oriented into an L-shape along and across the roof, respectively, all of which were completely rusted away to dust. See near the bottom of this web page:

I replaced the plates with zinc-plated steel and I replaced the tubes with aluminum ones and restored the fiberglass. The roof is rather flexible, but that’s the nature of fiberglass: it is plenty strong even if it isn’t stiff.

      Good luck!
