      Hello,

We just returned to Interlaken after 10 days and 1575km (985 miles) in Provence in our 1969 Land Rover Dormobile: My wife and I and our 2- and 5-year old kids.

The vehicle worked very well, except for the intermittent loud hammering of a bad cam follower and the sudden failure of the temperature and fuel gauges that is well-known to afflict old Land Rovers. It’s OK because I made a steady 15.5L/100km (18mpg Imperial, 15mpg US), so I could calculate when to go get fuel. I also only burned 1L of oil the whole trip.

For the hammering tappet (and the kids) only earplugs helps.

Roughly we went: Interlaken, Lötschberg train, Martigny (Forclaz pass), Chamonix (Mt. Blanc tunnel), Petit Saint Bernard pass (Val D’Isere), Coll Del’Iseran, Mt. Cenis (Susa), Colle delle Finestre and Coll dell’Assietta, Briancon, Dignes, Cote d’Azur, and return via highway past Grenoble and Geneva.

It was very cold in the mountains with snow above 2400m. But when we returned, it was warmer in Interlaken than it had been at the beach! Almost everything in the mountains was closed for the season, except gas (petrol) stations. After Val D’Isere we looked for a campsite for more than 100km before we finally camped in a campground between Briancon and Dignes that was closed. Normally that would be ideal, but it was difficult with small children. Nearer the coast more things remained open.

I’m thinking of what I’d miss if I don’t come to the big Dormobile meet in Normandy at the end of October, but I think I used my stores of good fortune on this trip and I’m not confident about the noises my engine is making.

      -Jeremy

Looks like a great trip – thanks for the report! I have happy memories of Le Lavandou from my early 20s (all right, a long time ago!) – 6 of us in a Ford Transit camper 😆
