Does anyone in the UK know where to get a replacement 8V 12inch strip light bulb for the interior light? Found out why mine doesn’t work, no bloomin bulb, so I don’t even have a reference…..
Also my roof vent is cracked (has been bodge repaired in the past) and the seal seems to be permanently soggy and not actually doing much, I think some water is subsequently getting in. Has anyone used the Dormobile replacement vent and seals? Otherwise, is it worth getting some epoxy and mending the original and replacing the seal? The Dormobile has spent its whole life under cover until now, as such I need to repair some seals and I seem to get a drip onto the cooker in heavy rain, not sure where it is coming from, lands in a small pool on the lid near the back door. The bunks are mint, so I really need to get on top of this!
December 11, 2012 at 5:59 pm #4993Hi Dan,
you know that Mr Jones has wonderful roof vents, don’t you?I have one of his, and a felt seal from Dormobile UK, though this seal is more of an anti-rattle padding and doesn’t prevent water from coming in. My roof window seals are also from Dormobile UK but these are generic parts.
Dripping onto the stove … Hmm I suppose this could be coming from anywhere, even a bolt hole for the roof lifter hardware! You’d best spend the night in it in the rain, watching your roof with a flashlight!
I don’t think epoxy would work on the original roof vent, but clear packing tape will. It’s not very pretty though. I broke mine trying to glue the crack (prying it apart a bit to get the glue in). They are easy to break once the crack starts.

Don’t waste money on the Dormobile vent. They are not suitable for a single closing mechanism as they are straight. Michel has made some exactly as the original.
AlexDecember 12, 2012 at 9:27 am #4996Thanks all, I think I will temporarily repair it as best I can and then maybe collect one from you next summer Michel? I will be coming through France at some point with the Dormobile (that is the plan) and could swing by. I looked at the Dormobile site for the roof seals and there seemed to be various, what do I need and what do the others do? I think the water may be coming in the vent when it is parked on an angle, running down the roof and dripping near the back, I thought about experimenting with various seals?
December 12, 2012 at 3:32 pm #4997Dan as far as materials serving to waterproof the roof, there are only the window seals (2-piece). The so-called “seal” for the vent is as I said a felt pad so it doesn’t rattle. All other Martin Walter sources of water ingress would be cracks in the fiberglass roof, a crack/tear in the canopy (this can even allow water in if the roof is closed, depending on the angle you’ve parked!) or water getting around one of the 60 or 70 screws going through the roof and roof vent cover (canopy screws, lifter arm screws, etc.). I sealed all my roof screws with sealant when I rebuilt it.
The Land Rover roof could be leaking, too. If so this would be at the gutter attachment and the leak would be evident on the walls, not the roof area. To fix that right means un-rivetting the gutter and sealing in between it and the roof, and hammering in new rivets. A big job. Bodging, one can go around the outside and inside at the joint to the rain gutter with sealant (I used polyurethane on bare metal). I suppose that a very runny sealant might get into the joint and do a good job, too?
I suspect your issue is the crack in teh vent cover or tiny cracks in the canopy. Maybe a first trick might be to park at a different angle?

December 13, 2012 at 7:41 am #4998Dan , I try here to draw you the scheme of the original strip for the roof vent ; often , the felt part is not in good condition , you can replace it by an identical place that you find in the rubber sealing strip of the side of a hard top for 110 .
Ithink you can also replace the whole seal by the one you find around the door of a Mini for exemple , like this :
Hope you understand my schoolar english !
MichelDecember 13, 2012 at 9:30 am #4999Totally understand Michel, and thanks both for your responses!
I am going to try and fix the crack with a specialist acyclic solvent to see me through to next Summer and then hopefully collect a new vent from you Michel if you have one? I will source some suitable seals, the current ones are mush (soaking and stretched).

MichelDecember 15, 2012 at 4:14 pm #5001Thanks Michel,
I went out in the rain last night with a torch…. Looks like it is the crack in the vent cover that is leaking in this location and it was leaking through the screw holes that hold the internal strap that is used to tie down the roof internally (at rear above cooker). I have packed some wax around it just now externally, to stop that one and will have to try and repair the vent cover. I also have a couple of screws missing on the roof hinges that I should really replace!
December 15, 2012 at 4:53 pm #5002OK I hope that has it stabilized (for this winter at least)! Did you spend the whole night inside!?
Roof hinge screws: if you mean those main hinges from the fiberglass roof to the metal roof, these locations might be a challenge to reach. And the screws might be missing for a reason (rust in the frame of the fiberglass roof, i.e. the screws or their anchoring may have disintegrated). They are installed from inside the fiberglass roof where you might get access if you have monkey arms. But if I remember right, non-superheroes have to take the canopy off to get there. Plenty of photos on my old blog.

December 15, 2012 at 5:00 pm #5003Yup, two screws missing in total (out of nine I think), I have packed the holes with wax just in case…. Frankly it is to cold to be spending any more than 10 minutes standing under a drip…lol… I am seriously looking forward to camping in Spring, hopefully my drivers seat and wardbrobe will be procured in time!! The little roof rack is amazing, I had to go to the garage to get my ladder today, to get to the loft to get the Christmas decorations!, it strapped on brilliantly, who would have thought such a small thing would be so useful!!
March 22, 2013 at 8:44 pm #5004Michel, will be leaving for France on or around July 20th for about 3 weeks, any chance of collecting a new roof vent from you during my trip (and for anybody else who needs one, I think I know of one other person)? Could factor in a visit to collect if you PM me our address and any recommendations for camping nearby?
My route will take my to Northern Italy and perhaps across the Alps to say hello to Jeremy if anybody fancies tagging along at any stage?

March 24, 2013 at 8:39 am #5005Hello Dan , I must be in France during this period , from the 20th of july to the 4th of august between Charentes Maritimes , Poitiers and Brittany , if you want to appreciate the Atlantic coast , it’s a good opportunity but it is not the way to Alpes , perhaps , until , can I find somebody living between Paris an Lyon who could keep the part .After the 4th , I will be in Poitiers where I live , it’s a nice place !!
MichelMarch 25, 2013 at 2:52 pm #5006I can make a detour on the way back, I love it in that part of France so wouldn’t be a bother 😉 It would be at the latter end of the trip probably around the start of August..
