Hi.
Can anyone be of any assistance?
‘Gertie’ is now in bare metal and ready for the paintwork.
What I need to know is how much etching primer I need (how many coats also, and is this the best for bare metal)
How much high build primer do I need?
Likewise, how much topcoat? I’ll be spraying at home so I guess celly is best? How many topcoats do most owners put on as I want a top notch finish and am quite prepared to spents hours cutting and polishing back.
I have searched other forums (Vee Dub- sorry) as the old type 2s were a similar size and the popular concensus seems to be about 7 litres, but that doesn’t seem nearly enough to me. ‘Gertie’ will be sprayed inside and out in a single colour with contrasting side stripe and elevating roof. Will 2 litres be OK for the roof etc.
Thanks in anticipation, Andy.

Hi Richard,
I can paint inside or outside, but garage has NO heating.
The gun I have is a suction fed 1 litre capacity type and compressor has a 100 litre reservoir and is plenty large enough to spray a vehicle.
Yes, I’ve sprayed vehicles before, but nothing this large and I’ve used synthetic and cellulose before, but there seems a few more paint types available now. I’m looking for a ‘period’ finish, not the modern ‘plasticky 2 pack’ sort of finish (if you know what I’m trying to say) I’ve no special breathing equipment.
What I’m after Richard, is some ideas of which primers/ paints are best for bare metal application, and the quantities needed. Generally I don’t mind too much on the costing, but I want to spray/ restore the CA on my own, so a professional bodyshop is not an option! Hope this is a lttle more helpful. Also I don’t mind flatting the paint before final polishing- doesn’t have to be a ‘straight from the gun finish’.
As I say, I’d like a period finish, but one which is pretty tough (I don’t want to have to repeat all this again in a couple of years!!)Cheers, Andy
May 19, 2012 at 7:39 pm #4792hi Andy as for the the first coat on to bare metal should be a polyurethane sealer on the outside 5 ltrs will be fine, ask any supplier to match the thinners and harders to the quantities of any paints you use , use only one supplier for all paints, next a coat of high build, two coats should be find but this will be now to your filler prep work 5 to 7 ltrs will be ok now lots of wet sanding is the only way to get finsh you want, your choice of top coat is not about new or old types of paint ie cella or 2 pack etc the spray gun plays big part as well as the paint mask you will be useing top coat you will need at least 7 ltrs just on the outside ,flat wet sanding ,then finish with 5 ltrs clear coat i use B&Q to mix small tins of the colours that look right, then spray paint primed sheet steel which i send to the paint supplier to match in 2 pack i hope this helps ps heat the workshop and take your time also jawel paints on ebay give very good advice and are very helpfull

If I do half the job you’ve done on yours then I’ll be pleased 🙂
Are you finished and on the road yet? -
