September 30, 2011 at 7:13 am #4445Looks like she’ll be snug in there over winter. Keep up with the photo as and when. She’s looking great.
September 30, 2011 at 8:22 am #4446Well, looking naked……but snug.
Bits are now in acid etch and filler primer, with a guide coat over the top. It’s amazing how just when you think every ripple has gone, more seem to reappear.
Guess I’ve now got all winter to get the panels perfectly flat ready for spraying in the Spring. Many cold Winter’s evenings in the garage ahoy!
If anyone has, or knows of any Gaydon Melmex melamine plates/ saucers/ teacups in PALE GREEN that are going spare….. I had a rethink on the final colour for ‘Gertie’ and subsequently now have a full set of period crockery in orange/red with matching brexton picnic hamper in the wrong colours!
Final topcoat colour is ‘Eau De Nil’ – a kind of pale green with a cream panel between the original alloy mouldings.
I have found a local upholsterer (Steve at SJ Bowles, Bridport) who will recover the seats and backrest/ toilet seat in matching leatherette and cream piping. Take a look at his site- he does a great job.
I’m looking to have her on the road by next Summer, ready for some local shows, days out and MTB trips. Reckon she’ll be a little slower than the rest of my mate’s modern vans and veedub transporters, but I’m sure she’ll get there eventually.
Will try to do a weekly update, as long as the enthusiasm and patience continues…….October 1, 2011 at 11:06 am #4447@AndyCA09 wrote:

And you’ll need lots of of it Andy. I found that once I’d done the body of the van, there was just about the same time needed inside to make the van “just right”. You’ll get there, just take a breather from time to time. 😀
October 3, 2011 at 5:39 pm #4448Orange and red aye? Sounds like that could match Molly. I’ve been aquiring a sad amount of Melamine and Formica recently as well, oh dear oh dear there is no hope for us!
October 4, 2011 at 7:12 am #4449I know Olly, sad aren’t we?
Should be spending time on paint stripping and money on CA bits……..
But searching E-bay for the elusive pale green melamine is somewhat addictive! 🙂
Seen some on at the mo, hopefully I’ll ‘win’ these and I can go back to a more prductive use of my time!
The strip down continues though, and I reckon she’s now 80% bare metal….. I have no fingerprints now….but reckon I’ve become immune to the corrosive properties of nitromors 😆October 4, 2011 at 8:50 am #4450Hi Andy
You or doing a good job there. but i think you need to put a coat of primer over the brr metal to protect it
I stipend mine a panel at at time and repairs it and primed it
DaveOctober 4, 2011 at 1:44 pm #4451Hi Dave.
Thanks for the advice…..
However, a few years ago I helped a mate with a mini which we bare metalled and left for over a year. My garage is dry, and there was no surface rust on any of the panels when we finished prepping and spraying about 18 months later…..
I will reclean the CA’s panels down though, just in case. I’d just rather prep ALL the panels at the same time. Hopefully she should be stripped in the next week or two…..
….Then ready for etch, filler primer and top coat….Will post some more photos soon.
October 6, 2011 at 3:19 pm #4452aa.jpg[/attachment:sub4fkxw]Do you reckon the weight of Gerties front end has drastically damaged the minis roof??? 😆
October 7, 2011 at 7:43 am #4453Dave is right Andy, you should prime your bare metal panels as soon as possible as even the dampness in the air car start the process of rust, especially as the weather is starting to change. Even if your panels have a thin coat of etch primer will be more beneficial than nothing.
Is that Mini made from wood????
October 7, 2011 at 4:36 pm #4454Thanks Gaz!
I’ll get bits in primer in next couple of days. Found some bits to weld up (which is good- I like bodywork, and it gives me a break from stripping)
No, sorry to disappoint, the mini is painted to look like wood (although I’ve done a few of these now and people STILL knock on the panels!) It’s fully spaceframed with a 6″ roof chop- the roof is trouser-belt height. I was really into minis, until I found ‘Gertie’. Will get the min finished AFTER the Dormobile 🙂
Haven’t put any other pics on yet, as an album of bare metaled panels and close-ups of various fittings isn’t all that interesting to the folks on here!
Have you got the ‘Bedford CA’ page on fb?
Cheers, AndyOctober 7, 2011 at 8:51 pm #4455October 18, 2011 at 4:21 pm #4456More bare metal……aa 155.jpg[/attachment:3kubz99o]
Another angle…..aa 157.jpg[/attachment:3kubz99o]
1 coat of acid etch and 3 of filler primer later.aa 149.jpg[/attachment:3kubz99o]
Progress is a bit slower this week. Bare metalled the rear doors, knocked out a few big ‘dings’ in the rear quarter panels and finished stripping the interior. More paint stripping tonight and then elevating roof to be removed to finish the roof.
Got to get loads more done and primed before the cold weather hits, then its into the house with the smaller bits!October 19, 2011 at 8:46 am #4457Looking good, don’t rush it or you’ll regret it. 😀
October 19, 2011 at 4:17 pm #4458Not rushing it Gaz, putting in as many hours as I can before I have to wear 2 pairs of gloves and 2 beanies just to stay warm……. I know ‘cos I’ve been there on other Winter projects 😆
If I can get the main bits (body panels) good, then I will bring the smaller parts into the kitchen and do them there, in the relative comfort (single bloke, so no Missus to moan!!!) -
