Is anyone else considering attending this French series LR club event at Ferrières sur Sichon (03) – (W of Lyons) – Sept 14-16?
July 31, 2012 at 11:42 am #4862Hi Tony,
I’d love to get to a Bal and this one is closer than most. I have a meeting until late afternoon on the 13th and maybe could depart directly afterward to make 2 days of the journey. Unfortunately I think school vacation starts the following week so we’d have to stage an illness, or else a portion of the family would have to travel separately.
I’ve still got your Colourtune. Any need for it soon? I recently completely re-tuned the engine when tracking down the reason for a misfire with a vacuum gauge. I realized that my valve tappet clearance had to be adjusted differently than the Land Rover manual directs, because the camshaft put in by the previous owner is a Weslake and the lobe shape is quite different (contrary to what I was told by someone supposedly knowledgeable). It runs quieter, now, and with higher vacuum, and a bit more oopmf, too. And with all that improvement I still haven’t resolved the misfire!

July 31, 2012 at 7:47 pm #4863Hi JH
it would be great to see you at the BDS if poss. The MG doesn’t need the Colourtune for the moment!
Weslake camshaft with standard head/followers/pistons? – to quote the ‘Jungle Book’ – “Keep away from dem – deys nottin but trouble”!!!The 6 cylinder is very particular about it’s ignition. If you haven’t replaced distributor cap, rotor arm, leads, and plugs & caps recently – it’s the moment to do it. Be careful with the rotor arm. because there are several types – one with a rev. limiter in it.
What oil are you putting in the Stromberg damper, and are you checking the level regularly?
August 2, 2012 at 8:54 am #4864The Dormobile has only been refuelled twice this year, so you have an idea of how little it’s been used! Some sort of major expedition is due.
Yes a WES cam, and yet it runs! Before adjusting the tappets the vacuum test indicated “worn valve guides” and the miss is an incidental finding where I noticed it sucking at the exhaust at idle.
I do know where to get a standard camshaft but the recent tappet adjustments have improved things soooo much. Also new plug leads help it start easier so that’s a clue that the ignition system was wearing down. The service parts in the ignition and carb (diaphragm, needle valve, floats) are 3 yrs old and the vac advance unit is new. But I never replaced the plugs and coil so there’s room to experiment. Maybe a ground wire I soldered onto the dizzy baseplate is stiffer than the original and hindering it turning(?). Failing improvement with electrickery I want to maybe try a new carb metering needle (I trust my previous owner to have put anything in there!).
There’s EP90 in the damper in summer by the way (10W-40 in winter).
I’d like to see the MG sometime!
JeremyAugust 4, 2012 at 7:12 am #4865Jeremy – EP90 is much too thick – 10w40 should be fine all year round. Is the misfire worse in the summer?
I forgot to ask – will you be joining me at the LROS 25th?
August 5, 2012 at 6:47 pm #4866I completely missed the LROS announcement! I don’t think we can get a late entry, military rules and all, but I’ll ask El Presidente.
We still have time to decide about and register for the Bal though.
My motor is behaving better now that I fitted the metering needle with the shoulder flush to the air piston, and re-centered the jet. I have a new needle/jet en route from the UK, too.
Thanks for the heads up!
JeremyAugust 5, 2012 at 6:56 pm #4867El Presidente owes me a favour, and if he refuses you an entry, I shall bring pressure to bear on his ‘ cojones‘ !!
August 7, 2012 at 9:47 am #4868Hi Tony,
I’m drawn to the Bal because it seems family friendly and is, of course, Series-centered.
What about the LROS event? There is room for us, but offroading on a military field isn’t going to entertain my bunch for long. I won’t even go offroad if it’s muddy because I don’t want to clean it all out of my swivels and gearboxes and brakes.

August 12, 2012 at 7:28 am #4869Hi Tony,
We decided to sign up for Le Bal des Series. The form says something about sending a check, which must be a French thing. But how are we supposed to pay from Switzerland?
I’ll skip the LROS event and try to get to the higher mountains that weekend.

August 12, 2012 at 8:21 am #4870Great news! Sally and I look forward to meeting up again! Am sending e-mail with payment details.
There are going to be about 6 Dormobiles!
TonyAugust 12, 2012 at 8:38 am #48716 Dormobiles! Great.
Who, pray, apart from Ant and Jeremy?
August 12, 2012 at 11:23 am #4872The 2 Michels (michelj & mr jones), le petit prince (with the ex-marc78 Dormobile) and a newly restored yellow 109 with Dormobile roof (xtian).
August 12, 2012 at 11:45 am #4873Is there anything available about the schedule, or anything anyone can say about past schedules?
It says it begins the Friday. If we do it in one trip we’ll arrive late and exhausted. If there’s not much to miss on Friday we can take 2 days and arrive early Sat. But if Friday’s important we may call in sick and leave Thursday night.

August 25, 2012 at 7:22 am #4874😀 bonjour messieurs

September 12, 2012 at 12:45 pm #4875Hi ant,
when are you heading out? You’ll probably overtake us en route, as we plan to leave in the dark on Friday morning and see some sights along the way. That way the kids sleep half the trip (I hope) and get to run around a lot, too. The trip home will be more strenuous, as we have to do it pretty much during waking hours. It doesn’t look like much rain is in the forecast, but if the weather’s bad we’ll have the caravan.
Knocking on wood that the sixpot is up for it!
