Hi,
Two of my seat fixing hand screws with the star-shaped handle have been lost. They normally fit into threaded holes in the seat mounting plates. The screws are 5/16″ but I don’t know the thread size (they are not UNF 24 or UNC 18 tpi so maybe BSF 22tpi).Can anyone help me find replacements? Can anyone confirm that they are BSF?
Thanks,
JeremyPS- They had been replaced with bicycle axles!
April 2, 2009 at 12:28 pm #2191Hi Jeremy
Just had to put a Die down mine as they were coming to the end of the thread, before they were clamping the seat. I used a 5/16″ unf die, but to be honest it seamed very slightly tight. The dies I have are cheap Chinese manufactured dies with no split. I guess Martin Walters has a proper set with the split and threaded they with the split fully open or threaded them on a lathe.
They all work 100% now, so it cannot of been a great difference? looked like 40 years of rubbish in the die, not much metal in there?
As for finding some, sorry cannot help, but will keep my eyes open.
Cheers Mick
April 2, 2009 at 1:47 pm #2192… OK thanks Mick.
Eyes open is all I need 😯 I wonder if other brands of Dormobile use these knobs?
UNF it will be, then. My threads are also scrounged up as yours are, before the seat is clamped. The P.O. had spacers on all the screws and I couldn’t figure out why until I took the seats apart last week. The spacers were to get the screw tight on the good threads … so the threads got scrounged up even further down the shaft … and so on.
My bike axles work well and look OK so I might keep them until I can find new original knobs.

Sorry I am late to the party again, I have a number of the original Star clamps if you still need some all with good threads.

April 29, 2009 at 12:06 pm #2194Hi Phil,
I also noticed your response just now.
After putting the seats into the LHD vehicle, it doesn’t look like the original star screws will fit. At least, one of them won’t fit and the other may be difficult to use (see photo on http://n.ethz.ch/student/jhackney/ConversionStarts.html). Just in case I find a solution to this problem, I’ll remember that you have them, but for now I’ll go ahead with my plan to use an alternative fastener in the tight location.

May 7, 2009 at 8:30 am #2195Hi Phil,
I still can’t send PM’s on the forum, so let’s try a post.
I was re-thinking the seat mounts and I decided I’d like to at least try to get the original fixings to work. Would you be able to send me two star clamps? Or, as I gather you see Mick now and then, could you somehow consolidate them with the rack he’s making for me if it’s convenient? An S2C member has offered to drive the rack down to me in July. I could manage in the meantime without the original clamps, but I don’t mind paying for shipping to get them sooner.
I can PayPal or send cash.
Thanks,

My thoughts are that I will quite possibly be swapping the dormobile seats onto my 110 – repeating your exercise !
The vehicle is a 1971 2a – won’t know any more until I get it back at the weekendAlex
December 15, 2009 at 12:19 pm #2197Hi Alex,
congratulations on your Dormobile! Are you sure you don’t just want to put the Defender drivetrain and engine in the 109? It would look so much better ;^) and brakes are easy to fix.
My front seat installation involved a change from RHD to LHD, which is where the difficulties lay. Otherwise I’d have simply taken the seats on the seatbox, warts and all.
If you do want to sell the sixpot on, and you happen to be vacationing in my region again, …
Looking forward to pictures,
Jeremy -
