    Hello Everyone,

I’m new to this all and don’t even have a dormobile, but I’m on the look out for a Land Rover dormobile (any suggestions of a Dormobile for sale most welcome!).

Anyway… maybe getting a bit ahead of myself, but I was wondering about insurance… whether the vehicle can be insured as a regular Land Rover or whether it needs to be listed as some kind of conversion. Also, can anyone recommend a good insurance company for this kind of thing?

    Many thanks,

    Ben

    Hi

We have recently insured ours through the Footman James scheme mentioned on the home page of this club.

With mileage restricted to 3000 per year and including recovery & legal aid less than £100 per year.

    Kind regards

    Paul

Ditto what Paul says, look companies who specliase in classic cars, get an agreed value policy with limited mileage and you can get it very cheap.

What condition of vehicle are you after?

    Hi Paul & John,

Thanks very much for your replies, that’s good advice. I’d probably want to find an insurer that could cover over 3,000 miles as I’m thinking about an overland trip, but I’ll have a hunt around amongst classic car insurers and see what’s out there.

I’m looking to find a Dormobile in fairly good condition. I don’t have much in the way of mechanical experience and much as I’d like to give it a go I don’t have the time or space at the moment for a restoration job. Basically, I’m after something that would be fairly reliable – I’m only just getting an idea of what a Dormobile might cost.

    Thanks very much,

    Ben

    Dear Ben

You can stipulate the mileage you need, 3,000 miles is fine for this 1966 Dormobile, very original, two owner 2,286cc petrol, but we also have a previously purchased, much £’s spent, galvanised chassis up rebuilt 1963 200TDI engined Dormobile in build as well and that will be insured for much more miles in due course, but probably without too much effect on the premium as there was no addition for subsituting a more powerful modern turbo diesel for the original petrol engine.

    Kind regards

Great, thanks for that. Sounds like I can definitely sort out some reasonable insurance… once I’ve actually tracked down a Dormobile!

I’ve seen the range of prices mentioned on this website, but I don’t suppose you’d know roughly what I should be paying for a Dormobile in fairly good condition which would be solid enough for a big trip?

    Thanks,

    Ben

If you become a member of the Dormobile Owners’ club you can get 10% off at Footman James who offer all of the above benefits and have a good reputation. I have two Dormobiles the 10% off insurance more than pays for the £17 annual membership to the club….. quids in!!! 😆

    Hi

Re values, there have been some earlier posts re this on the Series 11 club forum, although back in 2006, I think they said basketcase but complete to £1,000, on the road but needing a fair amount of attention to £2,000, neat and on the road to £4,000, concours what ever you want to pay, ebay £11k to 14k but at the Series 11 International last week if you pay a restorer £23k seemed to be the going rate.

    Now where’s that T cut & polish?

    Kind regards

    Paul

PS: Once our ’63 chassis up rebuilt 200 TDI is on the road the original 1966 is likely to go

    Hi Paul & John,
Thank you once again for your posts. That’s great advice – it sounds like Dormobiles go for a wide selection of prices, so hopefull I’ll be able to find something affordable. And Footman James sounds like a good bet, I’ll give them a ring to get a quote.
Good luck with the restoration project Paul, sounds great.
    Ben
