help with my smokeing b sieres diesel

hi wonder if any one can help i have a 1978 moter home body and steering on cab was fonished so i brought a 1986 ldv pickup then took back off the 78 one and put it on the 86 one my Q is the 86 van has a 1798cc diesel b sieres engine that smokes bad and seems to be runing rough it sound like some sort off timing is out and when on tick over it blows the odd smoke ring at a a surton time as the engine is playing its tune please any one can help thanks
