Hello, I’ve worked out (I think) how to put a picture up, so thought I’d show you my new Dormobile!
[attachment=0:14xiebhd]Presentation2.jpg[/attachment:14xiebhd]
It’s pretty much all there apart from the wardrobe / cupboard and badges. Ive made a good start on getting it apart to look what needs fixing. Plenty of rust and dirt. Its sat in a hedge for 10 years! I bought it from a man who has a series 1 swb dormobile (I know there isn’t supposed to be any but he had a pretty convincing story).
I could do with a new skylight, rubber seals for the roof glass, the bunks need re-covering, as do the seats, and it could do with a new pop top canvas. I was going to have a go at sewing one myself if I can get some suitable material. Anyone tried this? The stories I’ve read on here about bought replacements arn’t that encouraging.
It’s a great site – very helpful.
Hope to keep you posted with any progress.
regards, Toby.
July 23, 2013 at 12:36 pm #5099Looks pretty straight underneath the green slime 🙂 good luck with the restoration. I purchased all the required bits I needed from Jim at Dormobile, although I too gave up on fitting the new canopy 👿 and refitted the old one.
You could join up here too as there are a mixture of land rover campers http://www.rms1.co.uk/lrcc/forum/index.php?sid=46eb3a51cb8a6347568a1b2144d32478
July 23, 2013 at 8:24 pm #5100Thanks for the heads up on LRCC, didnt know about that. Looks good.
I was wondering if anyone can tell be how to spot if this is an original Dormobile or not? all the bits seem right, but I cant find a single Dormobile badge anywhere. Can you tell me where these should be, and if they are glued or screwed/rivited so I can look for holes etc.
The chassis number shows it as 6 pot RHD export – which is what I think it should be. But I’m told many were stripped and fitted to Station Wagons when they needed major chassis work. Any pointers would be helpful.
Great isn’t it. Hottest, dryest weather for 7 years and I start taking the roof apart to treat all the rust and if Pees it down 🙄 .

July 23, 2013 at 9:05 pm #5104It certainly looks original to me, mine looked very similar to that inside when I purchased it but it doesn’t take too long to sort out 🙄
The dormobile badge might be on the bottom section of the dashboard on the passenger side, the part that covers the windscreen wiper motor. You can see it when the passenger door is open. link here to different types – http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/Dormobile/badges.htmlJuly 29, 2013 at 11:50 am #5105Looks a great find.
Where are you in the world is Scotland a good guess?I have had 2 repro wardrobes made at about £325 each, but no seat in the bottom flap door, just the flap.
If you are anywhere near west yorkshire on august bank holiday weekend, call in to the National Mining Museum (Leafers at the Pit) You will see a few carawagons and dormobiles
Has it got the 2 separate front seats or a 2 man bench seat and a single driving seat?
All the best
Alex
LRCC would like to see your pics as well
August 1, 2013 at 9:23 pm #5106Hi Alex, I’m in Northampton, Scotlands a pretty good guess!
Just got back from a holiday in Yorkshire, I was there while the Billing show was on! poor timing all round as usual.
I’ve got a 2 man bench seat and drivers single. After a good oiling I can get most of them to fold as they should(ish) but the drivers seat has got me confused – it folds flat, but slopes very much downhill towards the steering wheel. Do they all do that?
The wardrobes sound good, do you have pictures?
I’ve started taking the roof to bits to sort out the rust on the frames. Going OK but slow as I don’t want to brake anything. I’ve got a friend who works with fibreglass who I’m hoping to talk into some repairs on the pop top. Who knows, it may get roadworthy before we run out of petrol 😀
Cheers, Toby.
August 2, 2013 at 12:53 pm #5107woww great project!!! 8)
she’s complete! how is the chassis and engine??
kind regards
ludo
August 2, 2013 at 8:21 pm #5108Chassis is very muddy and I’m scared to wash it yet as I’m not going to like what I find. The rear crossmembers knackered for sure, but arn’t they all?
The engine might be seized, it won’t move at all by turning the fan like my 4 pot does, but that might be as its a 6 pot and might just be heavy. The coolants been drained so that will need sorting. Its got 2 fuel tanks, front and rear that both have what was once petrol in them and I was assured it ran when it was last parked up. The exaust is like lace so ithe neighbours will be pleased if I get it running. 😀 I was going to take the spark plugs out and squirt some oil down the bores and leave it for a week or two before I try to turn it over. It has a capstan winch, so I can’t get to the dog clutch with a starting handle. Fingers crossed……..
thanks for the interest.
August 6, 2013 at 7:43 pm #5109Hello Toby , a nice car and a very interesting project , but how they can get this car in so bad condition ?
MichelAugust 7, 2013 at 5:45 pm #5110My latest purchase makes your dormobile look pristine I think!
August 7, 2013 at 10:54 pm #5111Blimey. Nothing a good wash won’t sort I’m sure:wink:
I’m kind of jelous as I much prefer a series II to a III. But then again, that does look propper knackered. Is that the one down south on ebaya while ago?I hope you’ve got a load of penetrating oil 😆 Good Luck! (and no rushing or you’ll make me look bad).
Today I made myself an electrolytic rust removal kit from a massive bucket and battery charger. It works wonders. I’ve read about them and thought I should give it a go. I’ve done the bunk frames and pop top hinges – it even takes the paint off too. Just leave it to get on while you do something esle. Highly recomended.
I’ve got a question though, having stripped the bunks to sort them I’ve noticed that they are wider at one end than the other. Problem is now I’ve taken them off I dont know which end is which. Wider end towards the front of the landy or rear?
Cheers
Toby
