Hello all,
I want to introduce myself as a new member of this forum. I own a rare and, as I believe, in the UK almost unknown camp mobile, a German Ford Taunus Transit 800 Westfalia Dormobile. Two official pictures you can find under the following links / browser address.
This car was built in 1963, shipped to England to be equipped with the Dormobile roof and then back to Riedenbrück where Westfalia added the camp furniture. Unfortunately Westfalia seems not at all to be interested in this part of the history and has even sold their own sample cars and, as fas as I know, also liquidated their museum. VW T2 splities are often seen still today, however the Ford is a lonesome kind, only known from our small fan circle (http://www.fk1000.de) 8 other times by now.
If you want me, I will supply more pictures and prospect material.
My car has been a family member since 1975 and is now being restored completely. This is why I get in here…. I would like to ask you if you know suplieres for the roof tent fabric, in my case red and white stripes of 5 or so millimeters (broader ones would not disturb too much…). I found the official Dormobile site, but there they do not offer this? I see only hard stuff parts there – which will also be helpful, but not as important as the fabric. As far as I know, this fabric has been used then in blue-white and red-white, the latter being that one that can be most often seen on campers like the VW and the MK1 Ford Transit. If there is a source for the complete tent fabric, I would be very glad to learn. As an alternative I would also purchase only the fabric itself and have it tailored and sewed by a car saddler – or my mum 😉Thank you very much for your attention and in advance for your help.
Greetings,

What an interesting post! – I knew the first Westphalia VWs used Dormobile roofs, but was completely ignorant of the Taunus. Seeing ‘Transit’, I thought of the British Transit, never realising there was an earlier version built in Germany.
Dormobile do provide replacement roof tents, but have a look here : http://www.proudtopop.co.uk/index.html
This firm is apparently about 100 GBP cheaper and can supply the original Dormobile green or red candy-stripe material.Good luck!
Tony
