Returned from an epic adventure / holiday yesterday in the new 2a.
We drove down (from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire) to celebrate my mum’s 80th birthday, setting off on the 14th August. 14 hours later we landed in Helston, Cornwall, stopping en route to top up with oil as the rear crankseal had expired, as well as blocked / split breathers causing numerous other complications.
After some repairs and new rocker box gasket, (as well as birthday celebrations) we set off to Brittany via Plymouth Roscoff, arriving in Roscoff on the 16th (Monday) evening.
Staying in Brittany to take in the Fete des Oignons, meant testing the dormatic seats further – definately more comfortable than the bunks!
Regular oil top ups (every 50 miles or so) got us to Normandy (Sizun) for a few days before moving on the the Somme (7 valleys area) where we enjoyed an area we hadn’t been to before, and then making our way to Zeebrugge via Oostende.
We then drove down from Hull to Alford , in Lincolnshire, to participate in the August Bank Holiday Morris dancing festival that is generally held there, arriving back here in Holmfirth, some 1600 miles, 4 and a half gallons of oil later.

Mechanically, other than the oil seal (on a 200 tdi engine), I had to replace front brake cylinder rubbers, tighten up the dipstick tube (not easy to get to), am suffering with gently siezing near side brake cylinder (s?), a nearside swivel that nears re setting (too much play) and both frong hub seals need replacing.

A successful trip (some photos later) which has given us the knowledge of how comfortable the land rover dormobile is and the confidence that Morrocco next year (and hopefully Normany in October) are within easy grasp.

What a nice trial journey when Marocco is in mind!
I can only suggest to do Normandy in October to double check how reliable the landy is… 😉
      See you then,
      Marc

Looks like you had a memorable holiday Alex, something to share with the grand kids in later years. 😀

Brilliant photo’s, thanks for sharing them. Your Dormobile looks very homely and comfortable. Great to see a photo of the bed all made up.

Although I’m not intending to use my van for holidays, I do intend to camp out at some of the classic car shows that last for the full weekend, that I attend next year. Can’t wait.! 😀
