Hi there,
today my new achievement – a Dormobile kitchen unit (the last one from Dormobile ?) – arrived. So bad the lid is missing. Some parts for mounting are included but I`m not sure how to fix it. Some is for the cooker I assume but I intend nor to use it as a kitchen unit because I don`t have a Dormobile roof and so I can`t stand inside. So I will cook and wash outside. But as a interest:
has anybody some pics how the kitchen unit and the lid is fixed ?

The channels in the pictures are for fitting the gas stove into the unit. I cannot see any original type parts to fit the unit into the vehicle.
The original fittings were flat plates with two fixing holes and a bolt welded in the middle. The plates are then pop riveted to the vehicle, to make captive fixing. Making them captive allows the cooker unit and wardrobe quick and simple to remove if you want to use the load space.
As for standing in the vehicle to cook, not sure anyone does that because the cooker unit is just too low. Most people cook sat on the wardrobe seat or as I do, stand outside. If I have to cook in bad weather, I tend to kneel as I do not have a wardrobe seat. Not having a pop up roof should not effect your use of the unit.
Will try and get a photo of the fittings.
Cheers Mick

October 31, 2013 at 9:07 am #5180Hello Stefan
I have the same sink unit than yours , buy in 2002 , you can see on the pics how to mount it and the type of gas grill you can fit, ask if you need some more

October 31, 2013 at 5:16 pm #5181Ok,
many thanks for your help. Now I know how the original mounting should be (as seen at “www.expeditionlandrover”). I think I will bolt it to the body with the screws they sent me with the kitchen. I`m sure I wont find the original mounting parts or a used wardrobe (which is out of stock at all dormobile company).
Not so easy to find dormobile parts or a used wardrobe 😯Stefan
October 31, 2013 at 5:56 pm #5182For the fixing on the body of the car , I had the original fixing , it’s a plate riveted on the car with a bolt free for a nut of 7mm .There is 4 fixing , probably you have the opposite plate on your sink ,
the first one is outside the sink :
the 2nd at the front bottom :
the 3rd , top front
and the 4th , inside rear , it’s a piece of wood that ajust the fitting (original Dormobile piece of wood ! )

Ok you are right. It should be possible to built. Nice sunday project.
StefanNovember 2, 2013 at 10:16 am #5186My dormobile had no wardrobe fitted but had the fridge stand instead. As a wardrobe is more practical I decided to make my own to suit my needs 🙂 The first one I made was just as a prototype to see if it would work, but I’ve recently constructed another which is slightly larger and deeper so I can keep the waeco fridge/freezer in there if I want to.There is still enough room for clothes, sleeping bags etc.
The fridge stand had the fold out step fitted, so I’ve removed it and adapted it to fit the wardrobe. I used 12mm mdf for the construction (glued + screwed) and fitted an aluminium angle to the corners for protection. I then sprayed the unit to match the rest with the hammered finish paint.I also made a deeper spice rack above the kitchen unit, in this I can keep a 4 person dinner set, glasses, cutlery etc. I then did some wiring upgrades for lights, fridge, fan, water pump, compressor, sockets etc. To hide the wiring I then made two more lockers which are also really useful and house led down lights. I then fitted caravan type locks to the doors, so when I am off roading the doors cannot fly open and empty the cupboards 😀
Here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea or two in case you decide to build your own, I’m afraid the pic quality is not too good.
November 2, 2013 at 5:19 pm #5187Thanks alot for the pics. I wish I had the talent of yours. Looks perfect !
So I`m looking for a wardrobe as I see it`s really practical to store clothes etc… and that is the one thing still missing in my Land Rover.
But if I`m going to do one myself mine will never look like yours ! I don’t have that talent 😥But Mick “Jabbawocky” can manufacture one, so I have to earn some more money to afford one. At the moment with christmas coming soon the children’s “wish list” is too long and they are first (with Jabbawockys wardrobe still in mind 😉 ). To find a used one is hardly possible.
