Well done Graham.
Both Mick and I have both done TDI conversions – Mick a 300 and myself, a 200. Only too glad to provide any assistance I (we) can.

February 19, 2011 at 1:40 pm #3786My long term plan for my dormobile will be to make it into a reliable tourer that can go outback 🙂 I thought by upgrading to a 200tdi this would be a major improvement on reliability and economy. My main concerns would be the reliability of the series gearbox connected to this engine and the noise levels ?? Do these alter much by fitting this engine ??
My current Landrover County has the 3.9 Isuzu lump in it which is great……but so noisy 😆 The only other item required will be the fitting of air-con as it gets quite warm here on occasion !! Although this summer has been a bit damp and very humid.February 19, 2011 at 6:50 pm #3787@jerryd wrote:

Prior to installation of the 200tdi, I chatted with a few people who had done the same conversion to be sure that the benefits were not outweighed by noise and on balance the advantage of relative immediate starting compared with holding on cold start with the original rebuilt diesel engine and the subsequent white/blue cloud were enough to convince me that it was worthwile on top of the fuel economy. As long as you don’t drive it like a hooligan the consensus of opinion I got was there is no reason for the gearbox to be any less competent than with the original setup. As mine are destined for use in self-drive hire’s, i hope this turns out to be true.
What have you in mind for an A/c system?

Noise levels are much higher than a petrol and probably higher than the 2.25 diesel. However, with 3.54 diffs (and prob an o/d) economy is much better. The 2/2a bulkhead takes a bit of sound proofing. I tried fitting as much “zinc flashing” to the bulkhead and under the gearbox covers but listening to a radio or having a conversation is nigh on impossible.

I thought they might be 🙄 I was hoping that it would be quieter than my current landrover. I’m not sure which air-con system I’ll go with yet, but it will probably be a roof mount system of some description.
