Hello everyone. What is the favored flavor of awnings for a dormobile. I was going to get an Oz tent RV2 but have read the poor quality/strength reports of them on the forum, so I have put my wallet away. I have e-mailed Graham at Tent Valeting services after the picture Jabberwocky posted asking for information on that. Are there any other awnings that will fit the back of a Land Rover that a quick and easy to erect?
Any reviews or what to avoids will be appreciated.
TVMJuly 3, 2012 at 6:55 pm #4835Hi
Jabberwocky (Mick)’s awning is extremely well made, and very ‘period’ – but rather small. I have an Outdoor Revolution Navigator, which is enormous, but takes time to put up.
Have a look here for an idea of what’s available. In general the ‘ igloo’ types are easiest to erect.http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1311&_nkw=drive+away+awning&_sacat=0
Cheers
TonyJuly 4, 2012 at 11:34 am #4836Wow! That is huge!! I think that might be too big for our needs. We have just taken on a pub (Handy if any of you are in the Yeovil area), so the days of dragging our tin tent around are behind us, hence the freedom a Dormobile offers. Chuck in some clothes & food and off we go, as opposed to loading the car, going to the storage place, load the caravan, etc, etc. Our hope is to tour the west coast of Ireland next year and take the occasional night away this year. A smaller awning might be more practical, but I am impressed with that and that it didn’t appear on the radar of proposed awnings. I take it that the build quality and practicality are good, hence the recommend.
July 4, 2012 at 2:11 pm #4837Unfortunately Outdoor Revolution no longer make my model of awning, but they have other (smaller!) models available. Have a look here for models specially designed to fit rear doors. Khyam are also a good make, and their Tailgate awning seems like a good choice. All the best.

July 15, 2012 at 6:46 am #4838I have an Aztec Auto Haven to put at the back of my CA. That’s not period look but it’s OK for the job.
July 15, 2012 at 8:25 am #4839Yes, this is a good solution for Land Rovers too. Unfortunately, I believe it’s no longer made.
July 17, 2012 at 10:52 pm #4840I wouldn’t say our awning is small at all? We only have the awning to protect the rear door and just enough room for the porta potti. We designed it to work with the Fiamma 2.8m Caravanstore awning we have on the side, to create a Foxwing type awning.
I would say our set up is perfect for what we need. Simplicity and speed of setup is the most important thing to us. Beer/glass of wine on the table within 5 minutes is the setup time we work to.
Here is our setup in Normandy this June.
If you want to chat about our awning, pm me.
Cheers Mick
July 18, 2012 at 6:51 am #4841Mick – it’s obviously perfect for your needs, and as I said above beautifully made and designed. However, if I had to sit in it with the flap down because of bad weather – with a table, chairs, and 40kgs of fidgeting Ridgeback – I would find it too small!
Beer/glass of wine on the table within 5 minutes
Now then Mick – it was more like 30 minutes in Normandy!

TVMI’ve heard no bad reports about oz tents and they are certainly popular over here 😀 If we go to any camping shows oz tent are always there selling like hot cakes.
I’m going to get the RV3 eventually, if I had to niggle about them it would be the size when they are packed away and the $$$ they cost.
First priority will be an awning as it gets pretty warm here 8) Yours looks great Mick, can you post any pics of your mounting brackets ??August 1, 2012 at 9:30 pm #4843Evening all. Just to add another possibility, I have heard good things about ‘Caranex’ awnings, though no experience of them myself. I would be interested if anybody else has or knows anything about them. They are a drive-away type, relatively small compared to a dome tent and not dissimilar to the Oz tent. They are made up near Oban, Scotland (http://www.crane.com) Just a thought…
August 14, 2012 at 10:06 am #4844Hi,
I’ve seen the Caranex’s on ebay occasionally but I always missed them. I think they look the part and I wouldn’t mind one at all. Free-standing is really the way to go in my opinion. Otherwise you have to fold up your whole vehicle and re-stow your stuff if you want to drive your Dormobile. My previous owner had glued an awning rail on the metal roof, inside the folding roof, for a very quickly erected shelter over the rear door. As you can see, it’s good for keeping your left knee dry while cooking, but nearly everything is still out in the elements. Obviously bigger awnings could be attached there.
Our other solution is a 40+kg free-standing tent, second-hand, actually for a VW bus. I think it’s much bigger than a Caranex. It’s a 2-person job to put up and down, really, approx. 15 minutes. It’s enough shelter for all our belongings, but there’s not much more space for, say, an outside table or for hanging wet things.
My Dormobile also has a rail on the side so I can make a wrap-around awning like Mick has. Then belongings (fridge, etc.) go in the tent and an outdoor table goes under the side awning.

August 19, 2012 at 7:59 pm #4846… or this used one just came up on the Series 2 forum:

Come to think of it, not much more useful than what I have (looks more “Landy” though!)
