Dear all, wonder if I can come and talk with you all as I am not a Dormobile conversion – just a Herbert Lomas ambulance…

There aren’t any good forums specifically for Bedford CAs and I hope that I can be welcomed on here?

I have had Billy about a year now and covered 3,000 miles touring Angelsey down to Cornwall, we are based near Fareham in Hampshire.

Billy runs with a 1600 4 cylinder petrol motor, 4 speed column change and gives us 30 mpg crusing at 48 – 50 mph nicely.

Look forward to chatting to fellow enthusiasts soon!

    John & Billy 🙂 (Oh and Helen too ! 😳 )

      Hi John and welcome!
Hope the moderator will be ok for you to stay with us.
Have you found a windscreen for Billy?

Hi John and Billy, you are very welcome here, the forum is for all to use and enjoy, the club maybe for original Dormobiles, but the forum welcomes all.

What a lovely CA, as a Landrover owner, I know Lomas did Landrover conversions, so I’m pleased to see your CA conversion.

It looks like you know your way around a CA as well, please tell us the history of your vehicle.

      Regards
      John

Welcome! That’s a beautiful bus even if the roof doesn’t “bellow”! I wouldn’t mind a CA (is that what that is?), when I’m finished with my Land Rover project. Did you have much work to do on it when you got it?

        Hi John, Jeremy and Phil,

Yes we managed to find a windscreen (how did you hear? ❓ )

The story for those that didnt hear it…

Stone flies at Billy, smashes toughened screen, RAC Winscreen folk give up trying to find a replacement, I spent 2 months on the laptop, spoke with everyone even Peter Swann at Pilkingtons in Kent to no avail and my insurers wanted to write him off 😥 … Then I remembered a guy up in Derbyshire who I had bought an eBay item from – he had another Billy plus a CA Debonair plus other wondrous things and I emailed him. Roger found me a screen and it was laminated! So Billy was saved.

        His story?

We have some great mates with an old camper, a Mercedes 306L, 70’s, and then we started to get the need to buy something old and fun. We tried to buy a Morris LD Ambulance but the owner wouldn’t sell (luckily!) so I started to scour the internet.
On the classic campers website was a list of vans and Billy was there, we exoected him to be sold but he wasnt! The next day we drove up to inspect him (in Coventry) and the widow was selling him for the deceased Polish owner Mr Richter.
Richter apparently bought Billy new from Herbert Lomas as an unsold amulance which then was immediately converted to a campervan. From December 1965, when new, until September 2007 when we got him, Billy has done only 60,000 miles. The last 12 years he did 6 miles each year just to get his MOT ! We have sorted out a few shelves, replaced the cooker (for a new period replacement) fitted new tyres, new brake system through out, and give him a proper old fashioned service.

As a result he drives like a RR, just purrs along !

If anyone needs any parts or just advice on CA matters just ask or email john.selman@btinternet.com

        Best wishes to all,

        John (& Billy)
