Air lock in cooling system?

Could it be that the reason the heater is cold and temp gauge only gets just past C is that there’s an air lock? Can I purge it from the whole system by jacking up the front of the van, taking off the cap, filling with coolant and squeezing hoses? Does this work. If not, I suppose it must be a duff new thermostat.

Any ideas, anyone?

I spent Saturday morning burping the system with no change in the engine temperature. The top hose and the top of the radiator get warm but nothing more, so I can only think that the new thermostat that worked when I fitted it on the first two occasions is now not working but opening too soon.
