Up for sale is a Bedford CA Dormobile Romany that I’m reluctantly selling. I had great plans for it but other than putting in a garage for 18 months I’m no further forwards with it. I run four other cars and already have a caravan so I’m afraid this one has to go.

Basically, it was first registered on 12th April 1963 – it still has it’s original Registration Number 4037 FG and is white with a burgundy stripe. For those (scoundrel’s) who are interested in such a thing the registration is transferable.

I bought it about 18 months ago from a friend; it was his Grandad’s and has been kept in their family since 1977; latterly owned by my friends brother who had to get rid of it after his Grandad died as he is not car-minded. This Romany only ran out of MOT in January 2006. It has some documents/history with it as it was a well used/loved Romany but only has 72,500 miles on it from new. There is a large box stored in the rear with spare points/brake shoes/radiator cap/other boxed spares etc.

I’m moving/merging garages shortly so necessity made me put air in the tyres and dig the Romany out of it’s garage last weekend. I put a fully charged battery in, checked the points/plugs and cleaned out the fuel (which had turned into jelly) and it started up within 5 minutes! It had quite good brake pressure too – I was impressed; it’s not been started or driven in 2 years and it starts/drives/brakes and steers better than I could have imagined. I even folded up the roof which operates smoothly and doesn’t appear to have any rips or tears.

There are some type-written letters dating back to May ’64 from Martin Walter Limited regarding the owner enquiring about purchasing some additional accessories and they quote in pounds/shillings/pence which are quite interesting.

I sought out this Club via Google as, ideally, I’d like to see a restorer/enthusiast buy this van as if I put it on ebay some’ll buy it just to get the Registration Number off it – which would be a a shame as it’s been 4037 FG for 45 years now. The van will need a bit of bodywork and paint as it’s a bit tatty here and there but considering it’s been used for 45 years of it’s life it’s in remarkably good condition and is a true survivor. Let’s see how may Mazda Bongo’s are on the road in 45 years time. 😉

If it doesn’t sell on this Forum after a period I’ll have to put it on ebay as I’ll have to get it out of the garage soon as I’m giving the garage up and the Romany can’t go to my new bigger garage.
