      Hi,

I have a spare head for my 1966 Debonair but I believe it is a low compression type. I wish to have it surface ground, the valve seats replaced – so it will run on unleaded petrol – and the valve guides and stem seals replaced. I can do all this work myself but I need to know the volume of what the compression chamber in cc’s should be. Does anyone have a head that can be measured? It is a simple matter of filling the chamber with a liquid and taking note of how much is used.

Also does anyone know if it is necessary to replace the valve seats for hardened ones if I run the camper on LPG instead of unleaded petrol?

      Regards, Terry

PS. I will be making a pattern soon to cut windows to replace the rear corner ones, I’ll let the board know of my progress in the cutting and heat bending to shape.

        Hi Again,

Further to my earlier post. If anyone has a cylinder head, within an hour or so driving distance of Liverpool or across the North towards Wakefield, that is off the engine that I can come and measure the combustion chamber volume I will be happy to come and do it. It will only take me a couple of minutes and I will bring everything needed.

        Regards, Terry

          Hi Terry
Can’t help with the cylinder head (I’m a Land Rover owner!) However, I can tell you that you should definitely have hardened valve seats to run on LPG.

Thank you for the reply, I have since removed my cylinder head and had the valve seats replaced. Fortunately I do some outwork (lathe machining such as replacement small-end bearings) machining for my local machine-shop and was able to work off the cost.

I did find out that the combustion chamber is machined directly in the head and it would be impossible to skim a low compression head into a high compression one, so the low compression head I bought has gone in the scrap bin.

I am now going to investigate fitting a Weber Carburettor, I think I read somewhere that a 34 ICH will fit and do a much better job than the Zeneth fitted.

            Regards, Terry
