    Hi there
This was posted in the VW section last year with no conclusion and i have the very same problem with my J4 ,, i’m posting on the Bedford forum as its got the most traffic ,,, please can anyone help …. many thanks … Dan

My partner and I have a 1978 VW bay window with a Dormobile conversion. I think it was originally a panel van as the windows have no inner metals sills.

We are in the process of a full restoration and have recently taken out all of the windows and window seals. However, I am struggling to find the right type of seals for the back passengerside and middle and back driverside windows.

These seals are not the standard seals as they are about an extra inch in width with an inner ridge that holds the inside trim panels. With it being a panel van originally it doesn’t have inner window sills and this rubber seal created those. I can attach two photos of the seal which I hope explain it better – but not sure how to upload them on here?

Does anyone know who manufactures or distributes this type of seal? If not, what do you suggest goes around the inside of the window to create a flush effect with the inner panels?

Thanks, your advice is much appreciated.

I have no experience with the van or problem you have but I know of a company that supply trim/ rubbers/ seals that might be able to help. If they don’t have it maybe they could point you in the right direction. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

    Hi
I dont think the seal still exists,If it is the seal that i think you need which is what i will be needing as well .
If it is a double width seal that carries the trim on the insde,it may be a case of using new trim for the outside and trying to cut and bond the old stuff to the inside.I would be interested to see how you get on.

I have decided on my van to use a modern seal which just takes the glass.

Although… For a couple of hundred quid I gather it is possible to have a die made to produce any shape rubber youd like.

If there were enough of us peoples then it might become a viable option.

It is now possible to get rubber seals. correct profile side window rubber section which also traps the interior millboard, complete with the black locking insert strip and suitably long for all shapes of window at £80 the pair plus £12.92 postage.

For front doors with aluminium sliding windows, he has the correct profile sealing rubber, which has not been previously available in sufficient lengths to cover LWB and SWB for £50 the pair plus £8.25 postage.

For the standard rear door windows he has the correct profile rubber, complete with formed ‘corners’ so that it sits flat in the frames and is an easy fit. All you do is trim and join the ends. These are £40 the pair plus £8.25 postage.

Mick has spent a long time fastidiously researching and restoring his van and as a former Martin Walter employee got frustrated that he could only get ‘near enough’ or not at all rubber parts, and what few NOS items available were both expensive and 50 years old.

He is not a business and doesn’t possess a computer, but has given me permission to publish his personal phone number in the interest of getting more vans back on the road.

    He can be contacted on 01303 252 870 .
