As many will be aware a number of the Yorkshire contingent of the Land Rover Series 2 Club are Dormobile or Carawagon owners with possibly the largest local concentration of Series 2 based camper conversions in the world. Over 4 days in late October 2010 we attended the inaugural gathering of the ‘camping cars’ in Lyons la Foret in Normandy togeather with the French Dormobile owners. We took ‘Bea’ our 1961 Series 2 Land Rover Dormobile and these are a selection of our photos from the trip:

The ‘english’ are in town
The star of the show, young William, otherwise known as ‘Mini Mick’ standing in front of ‘Bea’

AlexB’s Dormobile
Big Dave’s Carawagon
Barney

Carawagons homeward bound
The weather was good to us with cool sunny conditions apart from Saturday which was a mite damp.
Door to door a tadge over 900 miles at 20 MPG, no oil used and 2 punctures for us demonstrating the value of carrying two spares! Fuel shortages did not seem to impact too greatly, indeed we bought a jerrycan full back with us.
We had a great time, much thanks to Mick and Louise for the idea and invite and to the locals and native Dormobilers for making us so welcome.
Kind regards
Phil & JanOctober 26, 2010 at 11:30 am #3576I’m Green with envy as we couldnt make it .. but hopefully next time!
Glad you all had a good time ..
Team wyvern will be be there one day !October 27, 2010 at 9:47 pm #3577Hi all
What a great few days in France.
I have to admit to being a bit nervous about dashing down for the ferry, after Louise finished work, in a 40 year old Land Rover, but all worked out very well. We arrived bang on time in Dover and did have time to take it a little steadier after we got off the M25. Managed to find the others from Yorkshire on the M2, which was great to see that we had all made it.
William loves going on holiday in Barney
As we arrived in France at 3.00am, we stopped the night on the Aires de Service in Calais.
Is everybody Happy?

October 28, 2010 at 1:22 pm #3578Looks like it was a successful trip with a good turnout of vehicles, some nice pics too.
A friend of mine was on a heritage tour recently here in Australia, one of the vehicles in the convoy was a Carawagon over from Germany. Maybe someone knows the vehicle. Here’s the only pic available…
October 28, 2010 at 6:32 pm #3579Thanks for the pictures. An endurance test to be sure! I’m glad at least 2 vehicles made it home, too. The photo titled, “The Gathering” and the one following look like herds of some kind of living creatures. Eerie, but beautiful.
My engine isn’t looking bad at all: the exhaust valves and one cam roller need replacing. Were it not for the intolerable hammering of the latter I’d probably not have opened the engine until it was too late. Block will be lifted out this weekend to get the crank off (I had to wait to borrow a crane). While waiting, I could locate all the necessary spare parts I’ll need.
I was surprised at the long distance from Yorkshire and for Mr Jones from southern France. Both about the same distance as me. So it seems like northern France is the most central, and therefore most likely, location for future meets like this? That’s OK, barring fuel strikes I should be able to make it another year.

October 28, 2010 at 6:47 pm #3580Glad that your engine isn’t terminal.
There was mention of next year’s meet being in Yorkshire, at a certain ex colliery near Wakefield (LATP) however, there are certain impracticalities including the non tolerance of “boingies” which will have a reducing (and non inclusive) affect.
My french has come on a bit, and, if Big Dave is to be believed – my accordion playing!
All the best

We certainly did have a fantastic time. Not sure exactly what will be happening next year, as several of us are planning to go to Morocco next year in our Land Rovers. That trip will count out another French trip until latter on in the year again.
To be honest, the last trip was more of a Land Rover Club trip than a Dormobile Club trip as we started planning it before I owned a Dormobile. Saying that, it would be great to organise a gathering of all types of Dormobiles. When I have sorted the dates for Morocco. I will see if there is interest in a gathering of all Dormobiles? Probably organise it up north as most of the events in the past seam to have been down South. As the French are hoping to come and see us, maybe that will decide when and where?
That has started me thinking, how many users of this forum have a serviceable vehicle?
cheers Mick
