I’ve been offered one by Adrian Bailey for over £115 but I didn’t really want to spend that. Does nobody know of any other vehicles that used these switches?
Does anyone had a spare kicking around I can buy? I have attached a photo, the one I am looking for is at the top.May 4, 2011 at 6:14 pm #4019I’ve finally joined the dormobile site. I thought it was dormant, as most of the stuff relates to 2009!
I’m not surprised at Adrian Baileys prices, he is usually the last person I would buy from.
Are you sure the switch is faulty, not just the thermal cutout that has failed (it can be shorted together at your own risk)Try using some contact cleaner on all the internal contacts, they are probably just covered in crud.
If that doesn’t work, you could always make a switch from another car and cut it into the dash.
May 4, 2011 at 6:32 pm #4020Hello Russell,
The site is particulay active but it’s certainly worth checking up on from time to time. The switch is definitly bust, I think I may well have to buy a similar pull/ push switch and try and wire it in. I’m just about to start adding relays and a fuse box as well (I’m not, my mate is, electrics i beyond me)PS. Have you seen the Debonair for sale on eBay?
May 4, 2011 at 7:29 pm #4021I’m not sure if I should be impressed or contemptuous of your reluctance to dip into your other van for parts 😉
I’d be swapping out bits all the time with a ‘when one pops up on ebay I’ll nab it’ mentality (then of course I never would).
I wonder how long it’ll be before you crack…I can’t help you out with the switch I’m afraid – I’m just having a dig 😀 I’ve seen quite a few switches around but none with the three positions.
Russell – the Bedford CA chat ticks over pretty well, I don’t think there is much else on here. If you subscribe to the board then you get email notifications when people post but it stops sending them to you unless you click the link from every email (which I forget every now and again and wonder why it’s gone quiet).
May 4, 2011 at 8:36 pm #4022Thanks for that. Yes I have seen the debonair on Ebay, it looks better than mine !!! – but mine only cost £200
I have been speaking to Peter Dobbs tonight, what part of your gearstick is broken ?, as looking at it, it should be able to convert from a 3 speed box (you would lose the button to select reverse – it never works anyway). If it’s the actual gear lever, the “old time” way of driving them is to attach a mole grip to the selector rod. Apparently this was fairly common failure.
Trish – I had a look at your pics of the restoration, it’s nearly a debonair, an 11 seater minibus conversion which is quite a rare beast. It’s looking good, nice to see them being saved.

May 4, 2011 at 8:41 pm #4023Ah ha. I had a good gander at your photos a couple of months ago – but I can’t quite make out the make of that paint…? It’s a fantastic finish.
May 4, 2011 at 8:47 pm #4024Its just car plan paint from the local car shop. It sticks well. I was off work with a smashed arm so I rubbed down, filled and painted the van with a broken arm !!!
May 6, 2011 at 10:33 pm #4025Hi
Do you have the original switch? if it has failed you could always bend back the thermal interuptor and solder an inline fuse between the two.I think this rheostat switch was used on some lotus’s.
regards MalcolmMay 9, 2011 at 5:05 pm #4026Why is the switch so complicated ? 🙄
The switch in my Volvo Amazon just does the same job…. and is much cheaper
