Guys, has anyone got a spare engine I can work on during the Winter? Im looking for a 1600cc, but would consider something else with a bit more oomph. Does anyone know what the original can be bored out to?

October 3, 2011 at 5:37 pm #4477I know a chap with a NOS block, cranks, pistons etc for £150.
October 4, 2011 at 8:37 am #4478what is a NOS block? I know how to build an engine, but have no idea how to give my old camper a little more power
October 4, 2011 at 1:33 pm #4479Try ‘New Old Stock’……although Nitrous Oxide might be an idea……….. 😆
October 4, 2011 at 3:08 pm #4480I was really looking for an slight increase in power. when all loaded up, the Welsh hills cause all sorts of problems. is it just a block crank pistons, less the head? Id do it if the motor was complete with head. I could then mess around with my existing block.
I guess I could get a recon head, what about £100 austerity measures and all that.
Thanks for the info though
NigelOctober 4, 2011 at 4:55 pm #4481Yep, New Old Stock, it’s still wrapped in greased paper. I’ll ask him about the £100.
I will be trying to eek a few more BHP out of my engine next year but largely with a mind to increased the MPG not MPH. Apparently fitting a Webber ICH (I think) can help. I intend to port the head, fit a webber, and make a new inlet manifold and maybe an exhaust manifold. I already have the Accuspark electronic ignition and I’d imagine that helps.
Maybe you could skim the head to raise compression? Or even take the bores out up to something like +060 to increase capacity? I considered these avenues but don’t want to do anything to the vechile that isn’t easily reversable for the sake of originality (yawn)
Russell sent me this great little document about bringing your CA up to date;
October 4, 2011 at 6:30 pm #4482Andy thats all good information. I can confirm that the alternator and the Accuspark are great additions. However, the drop to 30mph on hills is a real pain in the ass. Maybe the Webber is the answer, though I can’t see much more than a few bhp. I did look at the VX 490 engine for some serious power 90bhp, but i havent seen what alterations id need to make to fit to the gearbox or whether a new one could be fitted. I kinda like the column shift too.
if you decide on anything, let me know how it improves performance, just keep up with those pesky VW’s is my target
cheers

November 1, 2011 at 8:18 am #4483I was going to buy this the last time it came on eBay, it didn’t sell for the starting price. It’s worth that just to put on your coffee table in my opinion;
November 16, 2011 at 8:47 am #4484Thanks for the tip, I bought the engine, so in theory i have a decent head. I will service the head and if your mate still has the short engine and pistons I may buy them off him.
Cheers

November 17, 2011 at 6:14 pm #4487Sorry chaps I haven’t done anything about contacting this chap yet. Leave it with me and I’ll find out some more info. He’s a friend of my ex-boss so it’s not quite as easy as making a phone call. If you don’t hear from me in a while then please do nag me about it as I may have forgotten.
Last time I spoke to him (about three weeks ago) he said it was still covered in wax paper, quite a rare thing to come across I expect.
Cheers,Olly
January 18, 2013 at 8:29 pm #4488Olly, any news on this NOS Engine you talked about some time ago. Im still very interested in it if you can get your hands on it and would gladly cut you in if you can pull the deal off for me
July 23, 2013 at 4:23 pm #4489Olly, Did you ever get a hold of the NOS short engine? I would be happy to get you a finders fee for it too. I need a new engine to put together for next season
Cheers
