Hi all i’m going to ask for some badly needed help which is why I’m going to post this on several feeds as I’m sure the Bedford’s are very similar in design,, i am almost giving up on our van that i have spent far to many hours and far to much money on already here is our Austin Morris J4 Dormobile which i’m just about to bring out of dry storage .. Body work is complete, roof work complete and ready to start doing the interior …

Well its a long story, cut short i can’t start on the interior because i have leaking windows , The original rubbers were dumped by the garage that restored the body and are not retrievable, these rubbers were special to the these Dormobiles as they had an extra lip on the inside for the interior panels to slip under see pic ..

The Second and equally annoying problem are the swivel windows at the rear they are missing all of the original rubbers which are unique and after several failed attempts they are all but currently useless and letting in water, i have spoken to several other van people who have just said its a loosing battle ..
I have tried several different rubbers and combinations etc and have spent hours researching and have pretty much covered all the basics so i have come to the conclusion that i have a few options left ..
1. I find a J4 Dormobile that is going to be scrapped because of damage but has been dry stored and has good rubbers … MMMMM not likely …
2. I forget about the rubber seals being able to accommodate the inner panels and find someone who has experience and knowledge in dealing and winning the battle of the swivel windows .. i.e. keeping the original look ..
3. I loose the swivel windows all together get replacement glass and go with standard rubbers and live happy knowing its not going to leak but ultimately loosing the originality which so far i have strived to keep ..
So there it is Dormobile community is there anyone out there who can help me get back on track, i would dearly love to finnish the van this year or should i just give up now …. All help greatly appreciated, i’m willing to travel and PAY WELL for reliable services ….
thanks in advance Dan ..

March 17, 2012 at 5:41 pm #4734My previous debonair had all new window seals installed by the following company http://www.vanwindows.co.uk
They must have managed to get hold of the double seal somewhere ??March 19, 2012 at 6:00 pm #4735Thanks Russel i tried them and they remembered your van well .. they couldn’t find the rubbers either so ended up using 2 different types … it was a useful conversation though and i now am convinced that those rubbers no longer exist and I’m moving on with a new plan … no wall i have to do is decide whether to loose the swivel windows or not … cheers … Dan
March 23, 2012 at 4:19 pm #4736Lovely looking van Dan. I’m sure you’ve already come across them but have you tried ‘Woolies’, when I was looking for rubbers they said if I sent them a sample or profile image that they would be able to match it.
Cheers,Olly
March 24, 2012 at 2:34 pm #4737I can remember it now, the side windows were in with a standard seal, and the trim was in place with another seal, which just touched the window seal. If you wanted you could part the two seals with your finger. It worked pretty well – could be a solution for you.
