Just started stripping paint on my ’60 Dormobile, getting ready for a Summer respray but I am a bit stuck on the removal of side windows. Have done windscreens etc in the past but not these. Do I need to drill out the quarter light pivots top and bottom, so I can slide the remaining frameworks out and THEN remove the rear smaller section of glass followed by the larger forward piece. (I AM TALKING ABOUT THE WINDOWS ON THE SIDE PANELS NOT DOORS) Or can I just pull out the fillet strips and gently push ALL the glass out in one hit? Don’t want to do anything daft and break a pane. Thanks in anticipation of some useful suggestions. Andy.
The Bedford training manual (1959 edition) doesn’t cover this, just windows of a van.
Hi Andy, remove the inner chrome strip from the outside, then the windows can be pushed out from the inside. If I remember correctly, I removed the little opening window first, then I just manipulated the rubber with my thumbs to push it away from the body. Make sure you have someone to hold the other side for you though. 😀
Will have a go at that later. Trouble is, I work on ‘Gertie’ alone, so will have to convince someone to give me a hand. Looks like the metal framework surrounds the glass inside and out on mine by about 6mm, so I was a bit worried about pushing the frame in case the glass broke. Guess there must be a bit of ‘give’. Just bought a sand blaster to spot clean some of the scabby bits ( or blow holes in the bodywork 😆 )
Make sure you start to push the rubber from the bottom corner (not the middle) 😀
