    Hello.
My name is Christian and live near Penrith in Cumbria. I am without dormobile and without land rover. Until last year I didn’t even know a combined object of such lustful desire, existed (indeed I have led a sheltered life! I did know about carowagon conversions, but not right for me). I had seen a series 2a 109 dormobile for sale and missed out because I didn’t really know what I was looking at, but you know when you see something and it just looks so … ‘right!’. Since then I have been looking, seeking knowledge and found my way here.

I would love to take my young family out and introduce them to the fun of ‘camperlandrovering’ and when I’m to old, pass my landy on to my children (wistful sigh!). Can you help me, ‘guvner/guvneress’? If anybody knows of an odd spare land rover dormobile looking for a new home, please bear me in mind, I’m looking 😀

    Cheers, Christian.

Welcome Christian, have you owned any series landrover before?

The Dormobile conversion is not an issue, but you need to make sure you are familiar with the vehicle.

Happy to give advice so ask away.

    Michelji,
Nous remerci pour votre aimable accueil, je l’espère, pour ainsi. J’espère que nous pouvons tous trouver nos rêves.

    John,
hello and thank you. No I haven’t owned any landrovers before. I have driven them on various farms, cattle and sheep stations in the past, but not got down to any nuts and bolts mechanical or restoration stuff. I’m your average competent home mechanic, in that I get on and do it whilst I read what I’m supposed to be doing (or supposed to have done!). It’s worked so far on my old motor bikes, but having said that, they are not on the road at the moment! So thank you for your offer of help, if I can find a dormobile I will be scouring the forums and asking!

      Hi Christian,
your situation sounds like mine. I was looking for a small camper that I could also use as a car, and all I knew about was a VW bus Westfalia. I discovered Land Rover Series by a classified ad for one that I went to see (it was a disaster). I discovered Dormobiles by accident and I can’t quite remember how. I was looking actively for a Land Rover Dormobile for about 3 months before I found mine and until I actually saw it I couldn’t believe they really existed. I jumped at it, thinking the competition would be fierce. Hmmm, in hindsight I should have looked a bit longer or offered a lot less money. I didn’t know about internet forums and the good advice on them until too late.

But after perserverance (which only means much much much money and time later) it’s serving its hoped-for purpose, taking my young family camping.

Good luck finding one. I had basic experience with cars and only bicycle tools when I got mine, and it came out OK. The work is fun; the non-fun part is finding the time!! I had to buy a lot of tools, too.

      -Jeremy
PS- you haven’t asked about powerplants but I’ve been in a position to compare my original 2.6L engine in my Dormobile to my friend’s 2.25L Dormobile and he really struggles on hills compared to me. Jabbawocky was visiting us last year with his TDI and blew me away. He also certainly gets better than my 17 mpg Imperial!!

      Hi Jeremy,

Thanks (i think!), I am torn between a ground up restoration (even though i have no real prior experiance. Am i stupid or what!) and trying to find a finnished one. As you say finding the time would to rebuild would be hard but rewarding. Instant gratification or long slow love/hate affair!

Engine wise, i would have to say a 200tdi would be long term aim, i was exploring on http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/Dormobile looking at engine options the use in the states and read with interest the 200tdi conversion that Glencoyne landrover does (http://www.glencoyne.co.uk) with 200di.

You had to buy a lot of tools … bring it on! (Like a child in a sweet shop)

      Cheers, Christian.

Christian, you must be aware that there is a Dormobile meet in Normandy in October?

Should you be able to reach agreement with Marc on his very nice original example that just needs a bit of tlc to get it woman/wife friendly, you could probably hitch a ride to the meet and travel in convoy back.

        Just a thought
