I had lot of play in the gear linkage and nomatter how I adjusted it I had trouble finding gears. This is how I solved it.

The play was mainly at the gearbox end .Remove two pieces , a lever attatched to the shaft comming out of the gearbox fixed with a cotter pin like in a bicycle and a lever which acts on it by removing two bolts and a spit pin.

On the one lever there is what looks like a rectangular metal block with a round peg attatchd , the round peg was sloppy in the hole . I made a sleeve from a piece of beer can to take up the slack and closed the gap in the the other lever in a vice , this is the slot that the rectangular block runs in. After I put it all toether it works great and makes gear change so much easier . Well worth the hour it took.

I hope thi is of help to sme of you

      Thanks Jim
Another sensible proof that sometimes beer helps! 😆

Thanks for the tip Jim, my gear change seems OK at the minute, but you never know what’s around the corner, so I’ll copy that tip, and add it to my file for future reference. 😀

I had the same problem with my gear linkage too, wobbled all over the place!

Didn’t open the gear box though…just fitted some extra washers between the linkage to stop the play in that, all gears slot in nicely now and the stick doesn’t wobble!

Here is a photo I managed to get of the linkage with the new washers:

I had this problem a few years ago and was lucky to have a good second had item. The hole in the original had ovaled badly. I fitted the new one and replaced all the washers and split pins, greased all the points up and it worked well.

Annoyingly, quite later on I determined that the gearbox was knackered, and indeed the casing cracked.

I replaced this 3 speed item with a 4 speed gearbox from an earlier van and used the 3 speed linkages on the new 4 speed box and it works fine. Only thing in doing a 3 to 4 speed conversion, you have to, and I mean you have to change the steering box and stator tube as they are incompatable. 4 speed box needs a 4 speed steering assembly. Bugger. Done it eventually but it took ages!
