    Hi.
Does anybody have any info regarding buying then importing a European registered vehicle into the uk? Complicated? Expensive? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi – close to European but not exactly I guess.

Imported Land rover from Guernsey this year. It already had a UK V5 and was declared SORN. However.

Despite having the Guernsey reg docs, bill of sale and insurance, to no avail. At Poole vehicle would not be released until VAT had been paid on purchase price, and the Port had received clearance from HRMC to release the vehicle.

DVLA declared that VAT was not require to be paid as vehicle was already on their register. However HMRC insisted and would not release the vehicle – I paid. And am attempting to claim a refund – different story. Beware – it appears that HMRC can query amount paid and inflict there own price on the vehicle if it is considered that the declared purchase price / bill of sale is unreasonably low.

Then you have to MoT the vehicle – which means it must be trailered to the MoT station or insured. The garage will MoT it on the VIN / Chassis number if not UK registered already. If it is previously registered, take reg doc with you. If not, make sure that the chassis number is clear and complete, same with VIN stamp as applicable.

Then you have to visit DVLA local office – in Bristol they were very patient and helpful – and fill out a form [V55/5 in my case] that appears to be only available from their office – not on line.

      Loads of detail here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/motoring/buyingandsellingavehicle/importingandexportingavehicle/dg_4022583

“You will need to take the following documents to the DVLA local office (photocopies or faxed copies are not acceptable):
completed application form V55/4 (for new vehicles) or V55/5 (for used vehicles)
a £55 registration fee (if applicable) and the required fee for the vehicle tax (cheques or postal orders made payable to DVLA Swansea)
a current British certificate of insurance
foreign registration document and any other papers relating to the vehicle
evidence showing the date the vehicle was collected (normally the invoice from the supplier)
      evidence of type approval
a current British MOT test certificate (if applicable)
the appropriate HM Revenue and Customs form
a ‘Declaration that a vehicle is new’ form V267 (if applicable), available for download or from a DVLA local office
documentation confirming your name and address (a list of acceptable identity documentation can be found on the link below)

Registering and taxing the vehicle won’t take place unless you have the necessary documentation. In some cases the DVLA local office may wish to see the vehicle to check its identity.”

Sounds involved – but is straightforward and this is the 3rd of 4th vehicle I have imported over the years, and the some have not been registered in UK previously.

      Hope this helps.

Wow, that’s great. A lot more useful info than I hoped for.
      Many thanks.
      Christian.
