Anyone had a go at adjusting the gear linkage on a 4 speed box ?
I can find all the gears except 1st and second. Im pretty sure it’s the linkage, as once 1st is found (as apposed to reverse or 3rd) – second is easy to select. The opposite is also true, if you can find second, 1st is easy to select.
It’s making town driving rather hard !!

Good luck with finding a solution.October 8, 2011 at 10:00 pm #4494Hi
I can photo copy the gearbox adjustment pages from the workshop manual and post to you if you wish.
The adjusting rod at the bottom of the steering column may need adjusting you might not be getting enough travel through the rod to the steering column to the gearstick.

MalcolmOctober 9, 2011 at 11:01 pm #4495Hi Russell,
I had problems with mine being very slack. I removed all the rods and levers and welded up the worn areas and re-drilled the holes. There is a small metal block that sits in a slot in the selector shaft lever (gearbox end) it’s hole in the small cranked lever was very oval, once welded / drilled the gear lever movement towards and away from the driver was much less than it had been. There should also be a spring at the bottom of the steering column to pull the lever down.
I think the ends of the rods were once case hardened I didn’t get a chance to redo this so it has deterorated slightly since.
The felt washers on the joints are normally missing, I think they were there to hold the oil in place.
Hope this helps
Yours

I have spent 4 months without reverse… parking the van by pushing it. 😳
To my mind, it’s a 2 people job, one who change the gears while the other (a clever one ) try to understand from under the van how things work because the gearbox adjustment pages in the manual are not clear.
Anyway what you describe is surely due to wear (small plastic rings tend to disappear with age 🙄 ) but I looks like the problem I sometimes have on 3 and 4. I am pushing the lever too far and can’t find 3 or 4 (quite annoying on a motorway…). Have you try to pull the lever not to full travel but slightly before the end of it and then find your gears? Can you engage reverse “easily”?October 12, 2011 at 6:20 pm #4497Thanks for the replies, I think there is some wear in the linkages – I have found that when the engine is warm, that is when second is hard to find which leads me to suspect the gearbox has lost some of it’s “newness”
The clutch is pretty high and has judder as well, so me thinks it’s a job for next year when it’s warmer.
October 18, 2011 at 6:52 am #4498Ive been on another long run – I now suspect the clutch – The clutch has loads of judder when it’s cold and the pedal is very high. I think it’s only just dis-engaging as 3rd and 4th are fine. If you can find 2nd whilst moving and double-declutch it seems ok.
Time to start searching for a clutch !! -
