Hi Paulski
I posted this question 3 weeks ago and had no replies !

I used an alternator off a montego diesel (Lucas) which has a good output.
This has 3 teminals the 2 big one are conected together and 1 small one.

This is how I did It but I am not an auto electrician so do this at your risk.

The alternator pulley lines up with the others but mounted in the same place the back piviot lug fouls on the oil filter (Bedford CA) so I made a flat bracet to lift it higher and bolted it to the front engine plate.for the back end I made an L shaped bracket with the foot of the L towards the back .You can use the origonal mounting holes and bolts but you will need a spacer on the piviot bolt ,mine about 25mm. This required a fan belt 10mm longer than standard.

For the wiring at the alternator the thin wire to the dynamo goes to the small terminal and the fat one to a large one I also ran a new fat wire from a large terminal to the starter solenoid but I don’t think this is essential but some say the old wireing is not upto the extra load. I would sugest using a proper plug at the alternator rather than the old spades (£2 at vehicle wiring products) .

At the control box simlpy join together all the fat wires with brown in them and all the thin wires with thin wires with brown in them .I had one other wire left over which supplies the hazard lights which I connected in with the fat browns.

I am rebuilding my van and when I got it much of the wiring had been cobbled together due to an engine fire so I have not talked about wire colours too much as it may be different to yours .All I have managed to check so far is that since the covertion it starts normally and supplies a charge to the battery , but will add to this if anything else crops up.

SAFETY make sure you do all this with the battery disconected and all crimped / sooldered connections are good.

It may not be idiot proof but I hope it helps .It would be good if other members commented occasionally , I can’t be the only one to have done this
good luck Jim
