The white Dormobile I posted a picture of in this forum (Spotted in Switzerland) has an awning rail like this on both the RHS and LHS. It was also simply screwed into the side of the rain gutter with sheet metal screws.
At some point, my Dormobile had an awning rail screwed into the rear of the aluminum roof, above the fiberglass rain gutter, for an awning over the open rear door. I only have the mounting holes to remind me it was there. The fiberglass roof obviously closed over it without rubbing, since there is no damage to it or to the canopy fabric. Of course this awning could only be spread if the roof was lifted open.
