you do have to put something back, but it does not have to be rivets. but when do think you will need to do this again, the good thing about rivets, is they last aboslutely ages, just get a cheap rivet gun from somewhere like b&q. otherwise get some stainless steel self tapping screws, make sure the thread is bigger than the hole, but not by too much, also before putting the screw in i would put a soft rubber washer on.
