I recently embarked on the task of renewing the roof seals on my Dormobile and wanted to share my experience, which might be helpful for others considering this project.
Preparation and Materials:
I sourced my new seals from JustKampers, including the roof, roof vent, and roof window seals. However, I encountered a challenge: there were no installation instructions provided. After reaching out to JustKampers and the Dormobile company without success, I decided to proceed independently.
Installation Process:
Roof Seal: I applied the roof seal dry, without any adhesive. This approach seemed to work well, as the seal fit snugly around the fibreglass top.
Roof Vent Seals: The new vent seals resembled miniatures of the roof seal, featuring a gripper channel and an O-sectioned seal. I positioned these around the fibreglass top rather than the vents themselves, ensuring a tight fit.
Roof Window Seal: The original window seal had an H-channel configuration with a depression for an insert. I maintained this orientation, placing the depression and insert side on the outside. I applied sealant on the flanges of the seal that were outside, leaving the inside flanges dry. This method seemed effective, although I did encounter some challenges during the process.
Challenges and Solutions:
Lack of Instructions: The absence of clear instructions made the process more time-consuming. In hindsight, seeking assignment help from experienced individuals or forums earlier might have expedited the process.
Sealing Issues: After installation, I noticed some leakage during heavy rain. To address this, I applied silicone sealant around the edges of the gasket on both the glass and roof sides. This intervention significantly reduced the leakage.
Final Thoughts:
Renewing the roof seals was a challenging yet rewarding task. While the lack of clear instructions posed difficulties, the experience provided valuable insights into the Dormobile’s construction and sealing mechanisms. For those undertaking similar projects, I recommend seeking advice from experienced individuals or forums to navigate potential challenges effectively.
